Promoting thuggery in a state like Ondo, where true leadership is yearned for, reflects the depths to which a politician can stoop in pursuit of power.
While thuggery is sadly not uncommon in Nigerian politics, the events witnessed in Ondo on the day President Bola Tinubu visited, following the recent loss of the former governor were particularly egregious.
Who could have imagined that on a day when the president came to offer words of solace to the people of Ondo over the passing of the Late Rotimi Akeredolu, some miscreants would choose to disrupt the peace of residents who had chosen to honor and support one of the state’s most esteemed sons – Wale Akinterinwa?
Only someone intoxicated by power, devoid of charisma and moral fiber, would resort to deploying miscreants, fueled by meager financial incentives, to assault the pillars of freedom, perception, and purpose. Yet, these pillars remain unshaken.
The purported thugs, reportedly affiliated with the incumbent governor’s camp, were given free rein to terrorize peaceful citizens and, under the guise of chaos, vandalize billboards belonging to gubernatorial aspirants within the All Progressives Congress.
This disgraceful incident occurred just 24 hours after the Wale Akinterinwa Campaign Structure sounded the alarm about nefarious activities orchestrated by elements acting on behalf of their principal to obstruct non-aligned APC members and leaders from welcoming President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during his visit to Akure and Owo.
Such actions represent a grossly undemocratic, disrespectful, unreasonable, and disdainful affront by any Chief Executive in Nigeria’s democratic history.
We see through the intentions behind this orchestrated attempt to instill fear in the multitude of ‘WA’ supporters. But like metal to dross, it will fail.
This endeavor to sow fear in a democratic and law-abiding landscape like Ondo State serves as a stark reminder of who the true agent provocateur fears.
Wale Akinterinwa epitomizes true democracy, appealing to the conscience of the people of Ondo with a proven track record that resonates deeply. His fortitude, determination, and worth stand as formidable barriers against the machinations of his detractors and those seeking to undermine him.
Let those in power today tread carefully, for the people are watching.
