As Nigeria confronts its current food security crisis and the urgent need for quick solutions, the governors of Southwestern Nigeria have unveiled plans for massive food production across the six states. This initiative aims to curb the soaring prices of staple foods and revive the region’s agricultural heritage.
Southwest Governors’ Forum Initiative
Governors of Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti states, under the Southwest Governors’ Forum, have directed their agriculture commissioners to expedite the implementation of a comprehensive agricultural plan developed during their meeting in Ibadan in May.
Key Strategies
1. Focus on Staple Crops:
– Initial efforts will concentrate on rice, maize, cassava, and poultry farming to alleviate food inflation pressures.
2. Farm Security:
– Strengthen farm security by creating specialized units within the Amotekun Corps to protect farmers and their lands.
3. Land Preparation and Crop Production:
– Clear large farmlands for planting and create farm units.
– Large-scale production of short-term crops like maize, sweet potatoes, and vegetables.
4. Irrigation and Mechanization:
– Revitalize moribund dams for irrigation.
– Improve mechanization across the agricultural value chain.
5. Cluster Farming Model:
– Adopt a cluster farming model to enhance efficiency and output.
– Expand input distribution and establish an electronic agriculture database.
