Saudi Arabia’s Investment
Saudi Arabia has expressed interest in supporting Nigeria’s agricultural sector through mechanization. The Middle Eastern country plans to establish manufacturing factories for farming equipment in Nigeria.
Pro tem, Saudi Arabia has pledged to purchase 200,000 metric tons of red meat and one million tons of soya from Nigeria annually.
This partnership aims to bolster Nigeria’s agricultural productivity and provide a reliable market for its produce.
UN Support
The United Nations is injecting $11 million to address the food security crisis in Nigeria. UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Martin Griffiths, announced that this allocation is drawn from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (UNCERF).
Griffiths highlighted the rapid increase in acute malnutrition and the critical state of food insecurity in Nigeria.
Challenges and Projections
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has projected that Nigeria’s food security problem will worsen due to ongoing insecurity and violent crises in parts of the country.
According to FAO data, the number of food-insecure individuals is expected to rise from 26.5 million to over 31.5 million. The FAO’s Cadre Harmonisé report notes that multiple security challenges have severely impacted food production and access, contributing to the escalating crisis.
