Nigeria, grappling with one of the highest neonatal mortality rates globally is showing its intention in addressing this critical health challenge. With over 8 million births annually, the need for robust health interventions is undeniable.
Recognizing this urgency, the United Nations Children’s Fund UNICEF, in collaboration with IHS Nigeria, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Governments of Canada and Norway, has inaugurated a solar-powered medical oxygen plant and a Level 2 newborn unit at Jericho Specialist Hospital in Ibadan.
This state-of-the-art facility was officially handed over to the Oyo State Government on May 29, 2024.
This innovative project is targeting neonatal mortality rates by providing essential, life-saving medical oxygen to newborns and children, especially those suffering from pneumonia and other respiratory ailments.
The installation of the solar-powered oxygen plant marks a groundbreaking achievement in Nigeria’s healthcare landscape.
During the handover ceremony, UNICEF’s representative in Nigeria, Ms. Cristian Munduate, emphasized the transformative impact of the new facility. “These facilities, alongside our strategic initiatives, are pivotal to improving health outcomes.
“They align with UNICEF’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 3, which aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages,”
Munduate expressed confidence that this model could inspire similar projects across the country, significantly lowering neonatal mortality rates.
Recent statistics underline the gravity of the situation in Nigeria, with the country facing some of the world’s highest neonatal mortality rates. The establishment of this facility and strategic investments in healthcare infrastructure are essential steps towards reversing this trend.
Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, received the facility with optimism, recounting the project’s conception and the state’s vision for its future impact. The governor highlighted that the medical oxygen plant, powered by sustainable solar energy, will not only support the survival of vulnerable newborns but also enhance the overall well-being of mothers and children.
In conjunction with the plant’s handover, the Oyo State government also launched its strategic plan for scaling up medical oxygen facilities from 2024 to 2028. This strategy outlines the state’s commitment to expanding healthcare infrastructure and ensuring that similar lifesaving technologies are available across the region.
