The Federal Government is set to launch Nigeria’s new Alphanumeric Postcode System on October 1, 2026, in a major overhaul of the country’s addressing infrastructure aimed at giving homes and buildings unique digital identifiers.
The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, announced the development on Wednesday, saying the new system would provide a more precise and digitally compatible approach to identifying locations across the country.

Tijani said on X: “On October 1, 2026, Nigeria’s new Alphanumeric Postcode System goes live. For the first time, every home will be assigned a unique postcode that’s simple, precise and built for a digital future.”
The initiative, being implemented with the Nigeria Postal Service (NIPOST), is expected to replace the limitations of Nigeria’s existing numeric postcode structure with a system capable of identifying individual buildings more accurately.
An alphanumeric postcode combines letters and numbers to identify specific geographical locations. Unlike systems that rely solely on numbers, the combination creates a much larger number of possible codes while using relatively few characters.
For Nigeria, the new system is expected to make it possible to assign a distinct code to individual buildings rather than relying primarily on broader geographic areas. This could significantly improve the accuracy of addressing in densely populated cities, rapidly expanding urban centres and communities where conventional street addressing remains inadequate.
According to an official video released to illustrate the project, thousands of Nigerians have been recruited, trained and deployed across various roles, including state coordinators, Geographic Information System analysts, supervisor field mappers and local guides.
The personnel are working under a unified system and standard to identify and map buildings as part of the nationwide implementation.
The project has so far covered 12 states across six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory, with buildings being classified and postcode units recorded.
The government said data collected in the field is being synchronised to the cloud and validated in real time as the project moves into its execution phase.
One of the central features of the new system is the principle of “one code per building”, which is intended to ensure that individual homes, offices, commercial premises and other structures can be precisely located.
Beyond postal services, the government expects the new addressing system to have wider applications across the Nigerian economy and public administration.
Tijani has previously explained that the initiative is designed to support sectors such as e-commerce, logistics, banking, emergency response and government planning.
For e-commerce companies and logistics operators, unique building-level addresses could make it easier to locate customers, potentially reducing failed deliveries, delays and losses.
Emergency services could also benefit from more precise location information. Ambulance crews, fire services and other emergency responders could use the codes to identify homes and businesses more accurately, particularly in areas where conventional addresses are difficult to interpret.
The system could also strengthen digital address verification for banks and fintech companies. This could help institutions verify customers’ locations more efficiently and potentially expand access to formal financial services for people who lack conventional proof of address.
Government agencies are also expected to use the addressing infrastructure for planning and service delivery, including census exercises, voter registration and the distribution of social intervention programmes.
The project therefore represents more than a change in the way Nigerians receive mail. It is part of a broader effort to create a reliable digital location infrastructure that can support economic activity, public services and data-driven governance.
With the system scheduled to go live on October 1, attention will now turn to how quickly the new codes are adopted by individuals, businesses and government agencies, and whether the infrastructure can deliver the accuracy and nationwide coverage promised by the Federal Government.
