Emmanuel Idowu’s Echoes of Innocence Brings Childhood Memories to Life in Lagos Exhibition

Art subtly tells it all.

Nigerian artist Emmanuel Idowu is inviting Lagos audiences on an intimate journey through memory and mythology in his latest solo exhibition, Echoes of Innocence, currently on display at the Alliance Française in Lagos until July 26, 2025.

Presented by Absa Group in partnership with the South African National Association for the Visual Arts (SANAVA), the exhibition forms part of the 2025 Absa L’Atelier Pan-African Exhibition Series; a prestigious platform spotlighting the continent’s rising artistic voices.

Idowu, one of the 2023 Absa L’Atelier Ambassador Award winners, joins six other emerging talents from five African countries in showcasing professionally curated solo exhibitions across Africa.

Blending acrylic paintings, sculpture, and evocative visual narratives, Echoes of Innocence is a deeply personal reflection on childhood, identity, and cultural inheritance. Idowu’s work draws on Yoruba mythology and formative memories, exploring how early experiences echo throughout our lives.

At the exhibition’s opening, Mr. Adedotun Sulaiman, Chairman of Absa Nigeria, praised Idowu’s work as deeply human, and profoundly Nigerian.

“Emmanuel reminds us that childhood is never truly behind us. It lingers in our memories and in the quiet architecture of who we become,”

The artworks are both nostalgic and introspective, inviting visitors to reconnect with their inner histories. Idowu’s symbolism-rich approach reimagines memory as a living, breathing force, something both fragile and formative.

Now in its 39th year, the Absa L’Atelier programme remains one of Africa’s longest-running and most respected arts development initiatives, offering mentorship, financial support, and international exposure to young creatives.

“At Absa, we believe every artist’s story matters,” Sulaiman added. “People are more than titles or numbers, they carry dreams, passions, and untold motivations. These exhibitions provide a stage for those stories to be seen, heard, and celebrated.”

This exhibition affirms the power of visual storytelling to bridge personal and collective memory.
