EFCC Goes On The Hunt For Forex Racketeers

Determining illegal forex racketeering involves looking for red flags such as promises of guaranteed returns, unregistered brokers, lack of proper documentation, and high-pressure sales tactics. Also of concern is the suspiciously high fees, absence of regulatory compliance, and difficulty in withdrawing funds are also indicators.

This is why the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is poised to prosecute 300 forex racketeers operating on a peer-to-peer platform outside financial regulations.

Chairman of the anti-graft agency, Ola Olukoyede during a recent interactive session with editors and bureau chiefs in Abuja stated that the accounts were frozen following a court order on Monday, with one account trading over $15 billion in the past year.

Recall that the Nigerian government recently took some measures to block online platforms like Binance and other crypto firms to prevent forex market manipulation and illicit fund movement. This move ensured that two senior executives of Binance were detained amidst efforts to regulate cryptocurrency exchanges.

Although platforms like Binance, Coinbase, and Kraken are inaccessible, crypto traders have turned to alternatives like Bybit, Bitget, Kucoin, and Coincola, as well as messaging platforms like Telegram with in-app wallets for transactions.

Olukoyede emphasized that freezing the forex accounts was to safeguard the foreign exchange market and bolster the economy, leading to a stabilizing effect on the value of the naira and the forex market. He stressed the importance of Nigerians’ support for EFCC’s success, highlighting that the agency’s failure would signify Nigeria’s failure.

Olukoyede also noted the seriousness of EFCC’s efforts, highlighting the discovery of 300 illicit accounts engaged in forex trading, whose unchecked activities could have caused a crash in the naira’s value. He stressed the importance of collaboration to prevent further deterioration, pointing out that EFCC’s intervention prevented a potential crisis. Additionally, he mentioned EFCC’s focus on combating illegal mining, which is considered an economic crime.

Spotting Illegal Forex

When dealing with forex trading, be wary of:

1. Unrealistic Returns: Promises of guaranteed profits with little or no risk are often signs of a scam.

2. Unregistered Brokers: Ensure the broker is registered with regulatory authorities to operate legally.

3. Lack of Transparency: Be cautious if there’s a lack of clear information about the company, its history, or its trading strategies.

4. High-Pressure Sales Tactics: Avoid brokers who pressure you into making quick decisions without giving you time to research or consider your options.

5. Hidden Fees: Check for hidden fees or charges that are not disclosed upfront.

6. Difficulty Withdrawing Funds: If you encounter obstacles or delays when trying to withdraw your funds, it could indicate a scam.

7. Absence of Regulation: Ensure the broker is regulated by reputable authorities to protect your investments.

8. Poor Customer Reviews: Research online to see if other traders have had negative experiences with the broker or platform.

Stay Vigilant

Staying vigilant and conducting thorough research can help you avoid falling victim to illegal forex racketeering.
