Premier League clubs shattered their all-time summer transfer spending record as the deadline reached a summit on September 1. The 20 top-flight sides committed a staggering £3.46 billion to new signings during the window.
The figure comfortably surpasses the previous record of £3.14 billion set last summer, when combined spending by the league’s clubs crossed the £3 billion mark for the first time.
The scale of the latest spending spree is even more striking when compared with figures from five years ago, when Premier League clubs spent a combined £1.13 billion.
Manchester City’s late acquisition of Iliman Ndiaye from Everton for an initial £60 million pushed the total beyond last year’s record, before the window closed with another blockbuster deal.
City subsequently completed the signing of Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez for £125 million, matching the British transfer record and making him the most expensive player in the window.
Fernandez was one of four players whose transfers exceeded the £100 million mark this summer.
City paid £116 million for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson, while Chelsea spent £117 million to bring Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa.
Liverpool agreed an initial £107 million deal with Paris Saint-Germain for France forward Bradley Barcola, with the transfer potentially rising to £123 million depending on additional clauses.
Tottenham Hotspur also broke their club transfer record by signing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United in a deal that could eventually reach £100 million.
The spending spree has further strengthened the Premier League’s dominance of the global transfer market.
Four of the 11 most expensive signings in Premier League history: Fernandez, Anderson, Rogers and Barcola were completed during this summer’s window.
The trend extends beyond the traditional spending giants, with clubs across the division committing huge sums to strengthen their squads.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa completed their 11th signing of the window with the £47 million acquisition of Senegalese winger Ibrahim Mbaye from Paris Saint-Germain, while Newcastle United paid £51.4 million to sign forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo from Lille.
Premier League clubs also continued to increasingly do business among themselves. Around 38 per cent of transfers involved moves between English top-flight clubs, compared with approximately 30 per cent last summer.
Manchester City emerged as the biggest spenders, investing about £458 million as manager Enzo Maresca assembled his first squad.
Chelsea were not far behind, spending £349 million in their efforts to strengthen the team under new manager Xabi Alonso.
Tottenham also spent heavily, committing £303 million to rebuild their squad after two consecutive seasons in which they narrowly avoided relegation.
The spending was not restricted to established Premier League sides. According to Transfermarkt, newly promoted clubs Ipswich Town, Coventry City and Hull City spent more than £400 million between them as they prepared for the demands of top-flight football.
Sunderland also strengthened their squad with the signing of highly rated Belgian winger Malick Fofana from Olympique Lyonnais in a reported £30 million deal, beating competition from Crystal Palace for the 21-year-old.
The unprecedented level of expenditure highlights the enormous financial muscle of the Premier League and its ability to attract and retain some of the world’s most sought-after players.
With four of the division’s 11 most expensive-ever signings arriving in a single summer, the latest transfer window has further widened the financial gap between English clubs and many of their European counterparts.
Several proposed deals, however, failed to materialise before the transfer deadline, despite clubs making late attempts to complete their business.
