The Great Green Wall (GGW) initiative epitomizes proactive efforts against climate change by planting trees to rebuild and restore our environment. It’s more than just planting trees; it’s about giving life back to our planet.
Local Efforts in Borno State
The Great Green Wall project has recently planted 3,000 seedlings across three local government areas: Konduga, Jere, and Maiduguri Metropolitan Council in Borno State.
This initiative aims to combat the increasing environmental degradation in these regions.
But the GGW’s efforts don’t stop there. They’ve also donated Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders to vulnerable women groups, particularly those who have returned to their ancestral homes.
This initiative promotes clean cooking energy, reducing reliance on traditional, environmentally harmful cooking methods.
Addressing Environmental Concerns
The Director General of GGW, Habiba Ibrahim highlighted the organization’s deep concern over the unnecessary and increasing felling of trees.
This deforestation has exacerbated the impact of climate change, particularly in Borno State.
Ibrahim during a tour in Konduga said:
“Our organization is deeply concerned over the increasing and unnecessary felling of trees, which have compounded the situation of climatic change in our environment, especially in Borno state,”
To mitigate this, GGW has planted around 3,000 seedlings in schools and communities in the affected areas. Furthermore, the donation of LPG cylinders to vulnerable women groups aims to promote clean cooking energy, reducing the pressure on local wood resources.
Ibrahim called on everyone to desist from felling trees and commended Governor Babagana Zulum for his efforts in addressing environmental degradation and erosion-related issues in the state.

Launched in 2007 by the African Union, the Great Green Wall initiative is a transformative, African-led project aimed at restoring the continent’s degraded landscapes and transforming millions of lives in the Sahel region.
This ambitious project is being implemented across 22 African countries, revitalizing thousands of communities.
The initiative brings together African countries and international partners under the leadership of the African Union Commission and the Pan-African Agency of the Great Green Wall. To date, more than $14 billion has been raised and pledged to support this game-changing initiative.
