AfDB Unveils $3bn Strategy for Nigeria’s Growth, Eyes 1.5 Million Jobs Plus a $1tn Economy

Nigeria is lucky. Nigeria needs help.

The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has launched an ambitious new five-year Country Strategy Paper (CSP) for Nigeria, pledging to commit $650 million annually from 2025 to 2030 to drive economic transformation, boost resilience, and create broad-based prosperity across the country.

This strategic investment could be the lever the country needs to unlock long-term growth and inclusive development. It could help Nigeria shift gear if middlemen and gate keepers don’t pillage the fund.

According to a statement on the bank’s website, $2.95 billion will be disbursed in the first four years of the strategy, with an additional $3.21 billion expected in co-financing from development partners. The plan prioritises two critical areas: Developing climate-smart infrastructure to strengthen industrial growth and promoting inclusive green growth, especially for women and youth.

Unfolding with this strategy is a bold attempt to address Nigeria’s staggering infrastructure deficit, which is projected to reach $2.3 trillion between 2020 and 2043.

The new investments will focus on expanding clean energy, modernising roads and transport networks, providing access to clean water, and supporting agribusinesses that can generate sustainable jobs.

The AfDB believes this initiative could help Nigeria double the size of its economy to $1 trillion and generate over 1.5 million jobs, particularly in rural and underserved communities.

“This strategy takes a transformative partnership between the Bank and Nigeria to a new level,” said Abdul Kamara, Director General of the AfDB’s Nigeria Office.

“By investing in sustainable infrastructure and inclusive agricultural growth, we are building pathways to prosperity for millions of Nigerians.” He said.

The strategy aligns with the AfDB’s broader Ten-Year Strategy (2024–2033), which positions Africa as a continent ready for transformation.

Over the last two decades, Africa has experienced sustained economic growth and steady progress in improving the quality of life for its people.

However, AfDB President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina evinced that Nigeria must act with urgency to fulfil its potential. “Nigeria belongs in the league of developed nations. To get there, we must shift our mindset and pursue rapid economic growth,” he stated.

Adesina also called for bold reforms in infrastructure, industrialisation, and economic diversification to break away from decades of stagnation.
