Kaduna Strikes Mineral Goldmine as Nigeria Eyes Global Critical Minerals Race

Nigeria’s ambition to become a major player in the global critical minerals market received a significant boost with the discovery of a vast polymetallic mineral province in Kaduna State containing platinum group metals, gold, nickel, copper, lithium and rare earth elements.

The announcement, made by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, has been described as one of the most important developments in the country’s mining sector in recent years and could potentially reshape Nigeria’s position in the rapidly expanding clean energy economy.

Speaking at the opening of the African Natural Resources and Energy Investment Summit 2026, Alake disclosed that the discovery had been verified by the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency, confirming the presence of exceptionally high-grade deposits of strategic minerals increasingly sought after for electric vehicles, renewable energy technologies, advanced electronics and defence manufacturing.

“This is important for newsmen and stakeholders to take note; this is the first time I am announcing this publicly,” Alake said. “Recent exploration breakthroughs verified by our Nigerian Geological Survey Agency have unveiled a world-class polymetallic mineral province in Kaduna State, consisting of world-class platinum group metals, precious and critical mineral deposits.”

The discovery comes at a time when countries around the world are scrambling to secure supplies of critical minerals essential for the global energy transition.

Demand for lithium, rare earth elements, nickel and copper has surged as governments and industries accelerate investments in electric vehicles, battery storage systems and renewable energy infrastructure.

For Nigeria, long dependent on crude oil revenues, the Kaduna find presents an opportunity to diversify its economy and strengthen the contribution of mining to national income. Industry analysts note that while Nigeria possesses vast mineral resources, many remain underexplored and underdeveloped due to regulatory challenges, inadequate infrastructure and limited investment.

Adding to the excitement surrounding the discovery, Chief Executive Officer of Steron Mining and Company Limited, Abu Omar, revealed that an estimated 3.3 million metric tonnes of lithium had already been identified at one of the sites. According to him, the company initially operated as a granite quarry before geological investigations uncovered lithium deposits and later occurrences of tantalite.

Lithium remains one of the world’s most sought-after minerals because of its critical role in battery production. As electric vehicle manufacturers expand production and countries pursue net-zero emission targets, competition for lithium resources has intensified globally.

The presence of platinum group metals, gold, nickel and rare earth elements alongside lithium significantly enhances the economic potential of the Kaduna province. Such mineral diversity could attract international mining firms and downstream manufacturers seeking secure access to multiple strategic resources within a single location.

Also, beyond export earnings, experts say the real opportunity lies in developing local value chains. Rather than merely exporting raw minerals, Nigeria could leverage the discovery to attract investments in mineral processing, battery manufacturing, refining and advanced industrial production, creating jobs and boosting technology transfer.
