In Nigeria’s political space, public praise from traditional leaders often arrives as part of the familiar ritual of political relationships. Yet beyond ceremonial commendations, there is a larger discussion about governance itself and the expectations citizens now increasingly place on leaders.
The recent commendation of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke by The Sooko Agoriesin, Oladotun Hassan opens a wider conversation about what has become one of the defining measures of modern leadership in Nigeria: visible development.
For years, governance in many parts of the country has been judged more by campaign rhetoric than by physical evidence on the ground. Citizens often hear promises of transformation but struggle to identify projects that directly affect their daily realities. Roads remain neglected, healthcare systems weakened, and public infrastructure left to decay while political messaging thrives.
Against that background, infrastructure projects naturally attract attention because they represent something citizens can see, touch, and use.
According to the ‘commender’, Sooko Agoriesin, thee ongoing Lagere flyover and road dualisation project in Ile-Ife appears to fit into that category. Lagere occupies a strategic position within the ancient city, functioning as a commercial and transportation artery that connects residents and visitors across different communities. For years, congestion and transportation challenges around the axis have formed part of everyday experiences for commuters and businesses.
The Sooko Agoriesin of Ile-Ife and Aare Yoruba Agbaye–President of the Yoruba Council Worldwide, Oladotun Hassan, described as the administration’s notable developmental achievements across Osun State, particularly the ongoing Lagere flyover and road dualisation project in Ile-Ife.
In a statement personally signed by him, the traditional leader described Governor Adeleke as a people-focused leader whose policies and programmes in infrastructure, education, healthcare and grassroots development have continued to impact residents across the state.
Sooko Hassan specifically praised the ongoing construction of the Lagere flyover, describing it as a significant intervention that would help reduce traffic congestion and stimulate commercial activities within the ancient city of Ile-Ife.
According to him, the Lagere axis remains one of the busiest commercial and transportation centres in Ifeland, serving as a major route for residents and visitors travelling within and outside the community.
He noted that the governor’s decision to undertake the project demonstrates a practical understanding of infrastructure challenges confronting the area and reflects a commitment to improving the welfare of residents.
The legal practitioner and cultural advocate added that beyond addressing traffic concerns, the project would contribute to the physical outlook of the city while creating opportunities for economic and social activities.
Sooko Hassan also commended the Osun State government for extending development projects to different parts of the state, noting that infrastructure initiatives under the current administration have not been limited to a single region.
He said the spread of projects across communities has countered perceptions that development efforts are concentrated in selected areas, adding that many communities have witnessed visible impacts of the administration’s policies.
While extending birthday wishes to the governor on his 66th birthday, Sooko Hassan prayed for continued strength, wisdom and good health for him as he continues his administration.
