Why Olugbenga Peter Obafemi is Emerging as Ekiti’s Underdog Challenger

By all conventional calculations, the 2026 governorship election in Ekiti State ought to be a comfortable ride for incumbent governor Biodun Oyebanji. The machinery of incumbency remains firmly behind him. Sections of the opposition appear fractured. Some former political rivals have openly praised his administration, creating the impression of a state drifting towards one-party dominance.

Yet politics in Ekiti has never obeyed easy forecasts.

The state possesses a long record of upsetting political assumptions, often favouring candidates who succeed in presenting themselves as outsiders confronting an entrenched order. From the dramatic fall of incumbents to fiercely contested transitions, Ekiti voters have repeatedly shown little attachment to political permanence.

That history now forms the backdrop to the growing attention surrounding Otunba Peter Obafemi, a politician whose movement from the PDP to the SDP may yet reshape the electoral conversation in the state.

Obafemi’s rise has not followed the familiar route of establishment politics. An aviation professional turned political figure, he first entered the 2026 governorship debate through the PDP, where he criticised the condition of infrastructure across the state and questioned the government’s spending priorities.

At the time, many observers viewed him as one among several aspirants competing for relevance inside an opposition party burdened by internal disagreements. That assessment changed once the PDP descended deeper into legal and structural disputes ahead of the election. The uncertainty surrounding the party’s participation in the poll weakened its organisational strength and created political space outside the traditional opposition structure.

Rather than retreat from the contest, Obafemi recalibrated.

His decision to align with the SDP has increasingly been interpreted by supporters as an attempt to separate his political identity from the long-running factional battles that have damaged the PDP’s standing in Ekiti. Within sections of the electorate, particularly younger voters and politically disillusioned residents, that move has helped him assume the profile of a candidate operating outside the old political arrangements.

Across Nigeria, voter frustration with elite political bargaining continues to grow. Online political discussions increasingly reflect distrust towards dominant parties and dissatisfaction with opposition structures seen as compromised or ineffective. While social media sentiment does not automatically translate into votes, it often reveals the mood developing beneath formal political narratives.

In Ekiti, that mood is becoming difficult to ignore. The endorsement of Governor Oyebanji by influential figures across party lines may strengthen the incumbent’s establishment credentials, but it also creates a vacuum for voters seeking a sharper contest. In many elections, consensus among political elites can unintentionally produce sympathy for a challenger perceived as standing alone against a powerful coalition.

Obafemi appears to understand that dynamic. His campaign rhetoric has steadily focused on portraying the election as a struggle between ordinary residents and a political structure sustained by influence, alliances and incumbency. His criticism of public expenditure, infrastructure delivery and governance priorities has been crafted to appeal to communities that believe the benefits of government have not sufficiently reached them.

There is also the issue of political freshness. Ekiti politics has for years revolved around a familiar network of actors whose rivalries and reconciliations often dominate the state’s political climate. Obafemi, though not entirely outside that system, is gradually positioning himself as a departure from its traditional centres of influence. That positioning may prove valuable among undecided voters tired of recycled alignments.

His challenge, however, remains substantial. Governor Oyebanji retains the advantages of incumbency, institutional support and visible backing from prominent political stakeholders. Reports suggesting weak opposition coordination further strengthen the perception that the governor remains the favourite heading into the election.

Still, Ekiti elections have repeatedly shown that popularity within elite political circles does not always guarantee electoral security.

The state’s voters have often preferred candidates who connect directly with public frustration, economic anxieties and demands for political change. That tradition explains why some political observers are beginning to view Obafemi less as a fringe participant and more as a potential disruptor capable of forcing an unexpectedly competitive race.

Whether that momentum ultimately translates into victory remains uncertain. Yet one fact is increasingly evident: the attempt to dismiss Peter Obafemi as politically irrelevant is becoming harder to sustain.

And in Ekiti politics, underestimating an underdog has rarely ended well.
