Will FIFA Disqualify Argentina Before the World Cup Final Over the Falklands Banner?

The short answer is almost certainly NO.

Argentina could face disciplinary action after several players displayed a banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (“The Falkland Islands are Argentine”) following their World Cup semi-final victory over England. FIFA has confirmed that its independent Disciplinary Committee is reviewing the incident under its normal procedures, but there is currently no indication that Argentina faces disqualification from Sunday’s ( July 19 ) final.

FIFA said it is assessing the match reports before determining whether any action is necessary under the FIFA Disciplinary Code. The organization’s regulations prohibit banners, flags and other displays of a political, offensive or discriminatory nature inside World Cup stadiums.

The banner reignited one of the world’s longest-running territorial disputes. Argentina refers to the islands as Las Malvinas, while the United Kingdom maintains sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, a position overwhelmingly supported by the islands’ residents in a 2013 referendum. Given the historical and political sensitivity surrounding the issue, the players’ celebration immediately attracted criticism from British politicians.

Some British lawmakers have demanded severe sanctions. Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey called for players who held the banner to receive one-match suspensions that would rule them out of the World Cup final. Downing Street also supported FIFA’s decision to investigate, reiterating Britain’s position that the Falkland Islands are a UK Overseas Territory.

The controversy has also drawn an international response. Andrew Giuliani, head of the White House FIFA Task Force, defended the players’ ability to express themselves while competing in the United States, citing constitutional protections for free speech. However, FIFA’s tournament regulations, not domestic free speech laws, govern conduct inside World Cup venues.

Despite the political backlash, history suggests the likelihood of players being suspended or Argentina being removed from the tournament is extremely low.

This is not the first time Argentina has displayed the same message. In 2014, Argentine players posed with a similar banner after an international friendly against Slovenia. FIFA responded by fining the Argentine Football Association rather than suspending players or imposing sporting sanctions.

That earlier case provides perhaps the strongest indication of what may happen now. If FIFA determines that tournament rules were breached, the governing body is expected to impose a financial penalty on the Argentine Football Association rather than affecting the sporting outcome of the competition.

Argentina President

Disqualifying a team on the eve of a World Cup final would require an exceptionally serious violation of FIFA regulations. Political displays, while prohibited, have historically resulted in fines, warnings or disciplinary notices, not expulsion from tournaments.

For that reason, the expectation among football observers is that Argentina will remain in Sunday’s final against Spain, with any punishment likely to come in the form of a monetary fine or disciplinary reprimand after FIFA completes its investigation.

Unless FIFA uncovers additional circumstances beyond the banner display, there is no precedent suggesting Argentina’s place in the World Cup final is under genuine threat.

The disciplinary process may produce sanctions, but a disqualification would represent an extraordinary departure from FIFA’s previous handling of similar incidents.
