In a stark revelation, Celades stated:
“One in 10 girls in Nigeria is projected to become a mother before the age of 18.”
The Regional Impact
The crisis’s impact isn’t uniform across the nation, with a disproportionate burden falling on the North Central and North-West regions.
In states like Bauchi and Gombe, a staggering 50 percent of young girls are expected to have a child by the age of 18.
The challenges compound, as half of adolescent girls face the likelihood of not completing secondary school, and 43 percent are already married.
Many find themselves in marriages where their partners are significantly older, impacting their decision-making autonomy.
UNICEF’s Bold Pledge
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, UNICEF and the UN have made a bold move — a $1 billion investment in Nigeria over the next five years.
