Wanted: Global Talent to Bridge Australia’s Fast-Approaching Skills Gap

Australia is sounding the alarm and the world is listening. A new report by the Future Skills Organisation (FSO) has revealed that the country faces a looming shortfall of 250,000 skilled professionals across its finance, technology, and business (FTB) sectors by 2030.

The FSO, a government-funded Jobs and Skills Council, paints a clear picture: while the demand for FTB roles is soaring, the domestic supply of talent is falling far short. By 2030, the number of FTB jobs is projected to reach 3.5 million, a jump of nearly 450,000 from current levels. However, the workforce pipeline is neither fast enough nor robust enough to meet this demand.

The breakdown is telling. The tech sector alone will need an additional 131,000 skilled workers, followed by 64,000 in finance and 48,000 in business-related roles. This growth is outpacing the overall workforce trend, putting intense pressure on education, training, and immigration systems to keep up.

“Education and training pipelines are not generating sufficient graduates to meet emerging demand,” the report states bluntly. While enrolments in IT and commerce-related degrees have increased, many institutions struggle with high dropout rates and an over-reliance on international students.

In 2023, 59% of IT bachelor’s students and 49% of commerce students were from overseas, suggesting that domestic talent is shrinking, not growing.

Vocational Education and Training (VET) has yet to recover fully from the pandemic, with completion rates still unstable. Together, higher education and VET systems aren’t delivering the skilled professionals required leaving Australia with a narrowing window to act.

The solution? A system-wide response involving coordinated efforts across education, migration, and industry. The report recommends targeted strategies to skill, upskill, attract, and retain workers in FTB sectors. Migration, while not a silver bullet, is seen as essential.

“Migrants already hold 41% of tech roles, and temporary-to-permanent migration routes have been critical in meeting demand,” the report notes.

Australia is encouraged to maintain and even strengthen these pathways, particularly for mid-to-senior level roles in tech and business.

In finance, where 16% of professionals begin their journey on student visas, the report suggests smoother transitions to permanent residency especially in fields like accounting, which continues to experience sharp local enrolment declines.

To support this migration strategy, the Consolidated Skilled Occupations List (CSOL) released by Jobs and Skills Australia in 2024 offers a roadmap. The list currently includes 456 occupations, from software engineers and cybersecurity analysts to accountants, auditors, solicitors, and data scientists, all eligible for employer-sponsored temporary visas with possible paths to permanent residency through the Skills in Demand (SID) visa stream.
