Walking Solo Through The Dim Of Depression

In Nigeria, personal therapy and taking time off for mental health are often seen as foreign concepts, it is not a Nigerian thing.

The relentless drive for survival keeps individuals on their feet, masking the underlying struggles with depression until they reach a breaking point.

But where does depression creep in for Nigerians, causing them to despise their own lives? Perhaps it’s when they find themselves navigating life’s challenges alone, without the support and understanding they need.

Here’s what you need to understand:

1. Barriers to Seeking Help: Despite the availability of evidence-based treatments, many Nigerians battling depression do not seek help due to feelings of shame, stigma, and discrimination. Additionally, widespread unawareness about mental health and available services further impedes access to care.

2. Challenges of Addressing Depression: Nigeria’s high poverty rate and daily struggles faced by its citizens exacerbate the prevalence of depression.

The culture of stigmatizing mental health issues adds another layer of complexity. Furthermore, inadequate mental health services in certain regions compound the challenges of addressing depression effectively.

3. Lack of Knowledge Among Health Practitioners: A recent lengthy study conducted in Benin City revealed that a significant majority of health practitioners lacked adequate knowledge of depression. This deficiency hampers their ability to effectively support patients struggling with mental health issues.

4. Call to Action: Everyone has a role to play in combating depression. Mental health services should be integrated into primary healthcare systems and made universally accessible. Encouraging more Nigerians to pursue psychology and psychotherapy careers can help bridge the gap in mental health practitioners.

Additionally, it’s crucial for individuals to refrain from perpetuating stigma against depression victims. This necessitates comprehensive education at all levels to raise awareness about the realities of depression and other mental health disorders.

Addressing depression in Nigeria requires a collective effort and a multi-faceted approach. By breaking down barriers to seeking help, fostering awareness, and expanding mental health services, we can create a supportive environment for those battling depression to seek the help they need and deserve.

Strategies for Coping with Depression

Life’s journey encompasses both highs and lows, with depressive episodes being a common experience for many. It’s essential to remember that you’re not alone in facing these challenges, and there are strategies to help navigate through tough times:

1. Nutrition for Mental Wellness: Consuming regular, balanced meals rich in nutrients supports brain health and overall well-being. Opt for green leafy vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats to nourish your brain, even while traveling.

2. Avoid Substance Abuse: While it may be tempting to turn to drugs or alcohol for temporary relief, they can exacerbate depression and interfere with medication effectiveness. It’s crucial to abstain from substance use, especially when dealing with mental health issues.

3. Prioritize Quality Sleep: Adequate sleep is vital for mental and physical health. Establish a bedtime routine, limit screen time before bed, and engage in relaxation techniques to promote restful sleep and alleviate depressive symptoms.

4. Open Up About Your Feelings: Talking about depression can be challenging, but it’s essential to share your struggles with trusted individuals, whether friends, family, or professionals. Writing in a journal can also serve as a therapeutic outlet for expressing emotions.

In whole, depression requires an all side approach that emphasizes professional support, self-care strategies, and societal awareness.

By implementing these strategies and fostering a supportive environment, individuals can better cope with depression and work towards improved mental health.
