The President of The United States, Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to Nigeria, threatening possible military intervention and suspension of U.S. aid if the alleged persecution and killing of Christians in the country continue.
In a post shared on his Truth Social platform on Saturday, Trump accused the Nigerian government of turning a blind eye to what he described as “a systematic slaughter” of Christians, warning that Washington could be forced to act if the situation persists.
“I have directed the Department of War to prepare for possible action should the Nigerian authorities fail to stop these brutal killings,” Trump declared. “No nation should allow the mass murder of Christians to go unchecked. If this continues, Nigeria will face serious consequences.”
The former U.S. president, who has repeatedly spoken on global religious freedom, also threatened to halt all forms of assistance to Nigeria, including military and development aid, until the alleged attacks are addressed.
“If the Nigerian government continues to allow these atrocities, all aid and assistance from the United States will be suspended indefinitely,” he warned. “America will always defend the persecuted and the innocent.”
Trump’s comments come amid mounting international scrutiny over reports of violence between farmers and herders, banditry, and insurgent attacks that have claimed thousands of lives in northern and central Nigeria.
Although Nigerian authorities have consistently denied claims of religiously motivated genocide, insisting that the violence is driven largely by competition over land, resources, and criminal activity, Trump’s statement is likely to strain diplomatic relations between both countries.
The Nigerian government has yet to issue an official response to Trump’s latest remarks.
