Africa is renowned for its rich diamond resources, with several countries making significant contributions to the global diamond market.

According to the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS), the global authority overseeing the trade and production of diamonds, African nations dominate the diamond production landscape, with eight of the continent’s countries ranking among the top ten diamond producers worldwide.

1. Botswana

This country is Africa’s leading diamond producer and holds the second spot globally, just behind Russia. With an impressive production volume of 24.5 million carats valued at $3.2 billion, Botswana’s diamond industry plays a pivotal role on the international stage. The country’s success in diamond production has been a major driver of its economic growth and development, earning it a reputation as one of the most stable and prosperous nations in Africa.

2. Angola

This country follows closely as the continent’s second-largest diamond producer. With a production volume of 9.7 million carats and a value of $1.5 billion, Angola has solidified its position in the global diamond industry.

The country’s commitment to sustainable and responsible mining practices underscores its dedication to maintaining industry best practices while contributing significantly to its national economy.

3.Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

The Democratic Republic of Congo ranks third in Africa, with a production volume of 8.3 million carats. Despite the relatively lower value of $64 million compared to other top producers, the DRC remains a formidable force in the diamond industry, contributing a substantial volume of raw diamonds to the global market.

The country’s vast untapped resources suggest that its influence in the industry could grow even further in the coming years.

4. South Africa

South Africa, known for its historical significance in diamond production, ranks fourth among African nations. With a production volume of 5.8 million carats and a production value exceeding $793 million, South Africa’s diamond industry continues to be a major player on the global stage.

The country’s deep-rooted history in diamond mining has not only shaped its own economy but has also played a critical role in the global diamond trade.

These African nations exemplify the continent’s dominant position in the global diamond industry.

Through sustainable practices and continued investment in their mining sectors, these countries are not only contributing to their own economic development but also maintaining Africa’s legacy as a key player in the world’s diamond market.
