Onyeka Onwenu was an embodiment of feminine greatness who reached past the cusp of music, literature, and cinema with her exceptional talent and grace. Also known as the “Elegant Stallion,” she captivated audiences with her powerful voice and charismatic presence, preaching the message of unity and love to a nation in need.
Born on January 31, 1952, in Arondizuogu, Imo State, and raised in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Onwenu’s impressive career spanned music, acting, human rights activism, journalism, and politics. She died on a Tuesday night at the Reddington Hospital in Lagos after collapsing at the birthday party of Emzor Pharmaceuticals CEO, Mrs. Stella Okoli.
A Multifaceted Career
Onyeka Onwenu’s journey began with a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations and Communication from Wellesley College in Massachusetts, USA. Before leaping into music, she was a renowned journalist for the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), known for her investigative reporting and her acclaimed BBC/NTA documentary on corruption, “A Squandering of Riches.”
Her music career took off in the 1980s, blending genres like highlife, pop, and gospel. She released several albums featuring hits like “One Love” and “You and I,” singing in both English and Igbo, making her music accessible to a broad audience.
In addition to her musical achievements, Onwenu was a prominent figure in Nollywood, starring in films such as “Half of a Yellow Sun,” “Muna,” and “Mothers-in-Law.” She also served as a judge on the X Factor series and as the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture.
Advocacy and Politics
Onwenu’s commitment to social causes was evident in her roles as a human rights activist and politician. She was a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and served as the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development in Abuja from 2013 to 2014. Her advocacy earned her numerous honors, including the Nigerian national honor of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).
Personal Reflections and Legacy
Onwenu experienced personal tragedy early in life, losing her father in a car accident when she was just four years old. Despite this, she remained resilient and dedicated to her craft and her country. She is survived by her two children, Tijani Charles and Abraham.
In a 2021 opinion piece for Premium Times, Onwenu expressed her wishes for a simple and private burial, urging her loved ones to celebrate her life with prayers and lighthearted moments rather than excessive mourning.
She wrote:
“Celebrate me with prayers, lunch or dinner afterwards. Share some jokes about me and laugh,”
