The Nurses Tail Through The Eyes Of Nightingale

The Nurses Tail Through The Eyes Of Nightingale

To do what nobody else will do, a way that nobody else can do, in spite of all we go through; that is to be a nurse.” – Rawsi Williams captures the essence of nursing, highlighting its unique commitment and resilience.

Christina Feist-Heilmeier echoes this same sentiment, stressing that every nurse is driven by a fundamental desire to care, serve, and help.

International Nurses Day, observed globally on May 12, commemorates the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of modern nursing. The International Council of Nurses (ICN) marks this occasion annually by providing resources and evidence to recognize nurses’ invaluable contributions to healthcare.

Established in 1974, International Nurses Day acknowledges the indispensable role of nurses alongside other healthcare professionals like physicians, physiotherapists, psychologists, and surgeons. ICN’s initiatives aim to raise awareness among the public and empower nurses with tools and information, fostering appreciation and gratitude from individuals worldwide.

Nigeria’s Nursing Travails

Despite the celebration, challenges persist in the nursing profession, particularly in countries like Nigeria.

There, a significant exodus of nurses daily has raised concerns among healthcare professionals about the critical shortage of nursing staff.

Mrs. Christiana Bawa, representing the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, acknowledges the resilience and dedication of nurses amid numerous challenges, emphasizing their multifaceted roles as caregivers, advocates, educators, innovators, and leaders.

Addressing the shortage of nurses globally and in Nigeria requires urgent attention and strategic investment in training and retaining nursing professionals.

With the global community projected to face a shortage of 13 million nurses by 2030, Nigeria alone needs approximately 150,000 nurses to bridge this gap. Investing in nursing education not only addresses domestic healthcare needs but also positions the country to contribute positively to global healthcare demands.
