Imagine a world where doctors can predict the return of breast cancer long before it appears on scans. This vision is becoming a reality thanks to an “ultra-sensitive” new blood test that researchers claim can foresee the recurrence of breast cancer years ahead of time.
According to the bbc, this groundbreaking test detects traces of a tumor’s DNA, known as circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), before a full relapse occurs. In trials, it was found to be 100% accurate in predicting which patients would experience a return of their cancer. The potential impact is immense, allowing for earlier treatment and improving survival rates for many women.
The study, led by a team from the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) in London, involved 78 patients with various types of early-stage breast cancer. The “liquid biopsy” they developed can identify 1,800 specific mutations in the blood released by cancer cells.
Remarkably, ctDNA was detected in 11 women during the trial, all of whom later experienced a relapse. None of the women without these DNA traces saw their cancer return.
On average, this innovative blood test detected cancer 15 months before symptoms appeared or the disease was visible on scans. The most impressive result was a detection 41 months before a scan confirmed the diagnosis, a finding that was presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology conference in Chicago on Sunday.
The lead researcher from ICR,Dr. Isaac Garcia-Murillas explained, “Breast cancer cells can remain in the body after surgery and other treatments, but there can be so few of these cells that they are undetectable on follow-up scans.”
He noted:
These residual cells could cause a relapse years after the initial treatment, underscoring the importance of this test.
The implications of this research are far-reaching. As Dr. Garcia-Murillas pointed out, the study sets the stage for better post-treatment monitoring and potentially life-extending treatments. Researchers tested blood samples at diagnosis, then again after surgery and chemotherapy, marking significant advancements in how breast cancer recurrence is tracked and managed.
Breast cancer remains the most common form of the disease worldwide. According to Breast Cancer UK, 2.26 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020, with 685,000 deaths that same year. This test could be a game-changer, providing hope and extending the lives of countless women globally.
While the research is still in its early stages, experts are calling it “incredibly exciting.” The promise of detecting cancer’s return years in advance opens up new possibilities in the fight against this pervasive disease.
