The “Miracle Berry” Nigeria is Yet to Taste

Miracle Berry.

While global markets increasingly turn to natural, low-calorie sweeteners, a powerful asset grows quietly in Nigeria’s forests largely untapped by the country’s entrepreneurs and investors.

Thaumatin, a protein extracted from the West African katemfe fruit (Thaumatococcus daniellii), is approximately 2,000 times sweeter than sugar and holds significant potential for both wealth creation and health security. In Nigerian parlance, its called “ewe moi moi” or miracle berry.

Also Known locally as Ewe eran in Yoruba, the plant has been used for generations, primarily for its leaves as food wraps. Its sweetening potential, however, first caught international attention in 1840 when British Army Surgeon W. F. Daniel documented its use. Yet, while nations like Ghana and India have moved to commercialize Thaumatin, Nigeria has remained on the sidelines of this miracle berry.

“One of the raw materials which holds great potential for the Nigerian economy is Thaumatin,” emphasized Professor Babajide Elemo of Lagos State University, a leading researcher on the subject. He recently convened an interactive session with the International Research Network on Alternate Sweeteners (interRNAS) to brainstorm how Nigeria can harness this miracle berry resource.

What is Thaumatin or Miracle Berry?

– Source: A mixture of proteins from the aril of the katemfe fruit, native to West Africa.

– Sweetness: Exceptionally potent but with a unique profile, slow onset and a lingering, licorice-like aftertaste. It is often used to enhance other flavors.

– Stability: Heat-stable up to about 70°C and effective across a wide pH range.

– Use: Miracle berry is a natural, low-calorie sweetener and flavor enhancer in beverages, dietary supplements, protein powders, and even pet foods.

Global Movement, Local Delay

Ghana has branded the plant Katemfe and, through public-private partnerships, launched agro-forestry projects for its cultivation. Processing plants have been established, and the product is marketed internationally by Tate & Lyle under the trade name Talin. Similarly, India has incorporated Thaumatin into its food and drug industries for about six years, with research ongoing to develop consumer tabletop blends, possibly with stevia.

Safety and Regulation

Thaumatin is designated “Generally Recognized as Safe” (GRAS) in the United States as a flavor adjunct. However, some organizations note potential allergen concerns due to its protein structure, advising caution, particularly for children.

Experts argue that Nigeria’s failure to capitalize on Thaumatin represents a missed economic and health opportunity. With rising diabetes rates and global demand for natural sugar alternatives, the market is ripe. Beyond sweetening, Thaumatin acts as a flavor synergist, enhancing creaminess in products like chocolate and improving flavor perception alongside ingredients like MSG.

“We are yet to utilize it for competitive advantage beyond wrapping moi-moi and ofada rice,” one researcher noted, highlighting the gap between local tradition and modern agro-industrial potential.

The push now is for indigenous entrepreneurs, investors, and policymakers to look inward, transforming a forest fruit into a sweet source of national revenue and healthier living.

Miracle berry could be our next revenue spinner.
