Supporting Early Career Scientists is Key to Addressing Climate Crisis

Scientific research is critical to tackling the climate crisis, yet African early career researchers—those within eight years of earning their PhD—face systemic challenges that limit their contributions. Despite Africa being among the regions most vulnerable to climate change, its scientists are underrepresented in the peer review processes of key global climate reports, including those by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

The IPCC reports, which influence global climate policy, rely heavily on peer reviews to ensure scientific credibility. Yet, as recent research reveals, early career researchers from low- and lower-income countries made up less than 1% of the reviewers between 2018 and 2021. This glaring disparity hinders not only their professional growth but also the inclusivity and relevance of global climate responses.

The Importance of Early Career Researchers

Early career researchers bring fresh perspectives that can challenge biases held by senior scientists, improving the quality of scientific publishing. Studies show that while their contributions to IPCC reports are modest—generating 2,400 comments per review on average—36% of these comments significantly enhance the reports by correcting inaccuracies or misinterpretations.

“These researchers are the scientists of tomorrow,” said R. Arun Prasath, an early career researcher and co-author of a recent study on the issue. “They are the ones who will develop new research, uncover region-specific climate impacts, and create adaptation strategies that reflect Africa’s unique environmental challenges.”

The Systemic Challenges Facing African Scientists

The challenges for African early career researchers are immense. From 1990 to 2020, 78% of research funding for climate studies in Africa went to institutions in Europe and North America. This funding imbalance restricts African scientists from conducting locally focused studies, leaving them unable to effectively influence policies that directly impact their regions.

Also, these researchers often lack access to mentorship, training, and networks. Peer review, a critical skill for scientific advancement, requires guidance from senior researchers, which many early career scientists do not receive. Often, they assist established researchers without recognition, perpetuating a cycle of underappreciation and underrepresentation.

The Consequences of Exclusion

The lack of inclusion in global climate discussions and policy-making has far-reaching consequences. Without African voices, region-specific climate impacts are overlooked, and global responses risk being incomplete or irrelevant to the continent’s needs.

This exclusion also contributes to Africa’s ongoing “brain drain,” as talented researchers seek opportunities in developed countries where resources and recognition are more accessible.  

To address these issues, targeted efforts are needed to support African early career researchers and ensure their inclusion in global scientific processes.

1. Structured Training and Mentorship  

Tailored mentorship programs should be established to help early career researchers develop peer review skills and navigate systemic challenges. Senior scientists can play a vital role in offering guidance and fostering professional growth.

2. Equitable Funding and Resources 

International collaborations must prioritize equitable access to research funding and resources. Without this, African scientists cannot conduct high-quality, locally focused studies or influence the policies that directly affect their regions.

3. Networking Opportunities

Formal networking initiatives, such as regional workshops and online forums, should be created to build a sense of community and encourage collaboration. These platforms can also provide opportunities for researchers to share insights and develop joint projects.

4. Inclusion in Peer Reviews

The IPCC and similar organizations must formally include African early career researchers in their peer review processes. This will not only enhance the quality of climate reports but also empower the next generation of African scientists.

Timing is Crucial

As Africa faces the brunt of climate change, its scientists must play a central role in shaping solutions. By investing in early career researchers and addressing systemic barriers, the global scientific community can foster inclusivity and create climate policies that reflect the realities of the entire world.

“The future of climate science depends on diverse voices,” Prasath emphasized. “It’s time to ensure that Africa’s early career researchers are heard and supported, for the benefit of science and the planet.”
