Scorching Heatwave Grips Nigeria as NiMet Warns of Rising Health Risks

How is the heat at your end? Crazy right?!

Nigeria is currently battling an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring to uncomfortable levels across many parts of the country. The unusually hot conditions have left many residents sweating even in air-conditioned spaces, highlighting the severity of the current weather pattern.

The situation comes months after the country experienced a weak harmattan season during the Yuletide period, a development that meteorologists say may have contributed to the prolonged heat being felt across several regions.

In response, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a public advisory urging Nigerians to take precautionary measures to avoid heat-related illnesses as temperatures continue to climb.

In the advisory released on Tuesday, March 10, the agency described the prevailing heat as a significant health risk and warned that several states could experience extreme conditions.

According to NiMet, states expected to face the most severe heat include Kebbi State, Niger State, Kwara State, Oyo State, Kogi State, Nasarawa State, Anambra State, Abia State, Ebonyi State, Cross River State and the Federal Capital Territory.

Northern states such as Taraba State, Adamawa State, Plateau State, Kaduna State, Zamfara State and Sokoto State have also been placed on high alert.

Meteorologists warn that prolonged exposure to the extreme heat could lead to thermal discomfort, dehydration, headaches, fatigue and reduced productivity. Vulnerable groups including pregnant women, children, elderly persons and Muslims observing the Ramadan fast, are considered particularly at risk.

Across affected areas, residents say they have begun adjusting their daily routines to cope with the heat, with many choosing to remain indoors during peak sunshine hours.

Experts note that the combination of high temperatures and humidity increases the heat index, making conditions feel hotter than the actual temperature and placing additional stress on the body’s cooling system.

How to Stay Safe During Extreme Heat

Health authorities have outlined several steps Nigerians can take to protect themselves as temperatures climb above 40°C.

Residents are advised to stay well hydrated by drinking at least two to three litres of water daily, even before feeling thirsty, to replace fluids lost through sweating.

Eating water-rich fruits such as watermelon, oranges, cucumbers and pineapple can also help maintain hydration, while excessive alcohol and caffeine should be avoided as they can worsen dehydration.

People are encouraged to limit outdoor activities between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun’s intensity is at its peak.

Wearing light-coloured, loose-fitting cotton clothing can help the body stay cool by allowing air circulation and reflecting sunlight.

Those who must go outdoors should protect themselves with sunscreen, hats, umbrellas or sunglasses to reduce direct exposure to the sun.

Its also important to reduce strenuous physical activity such as intense exercise or long walks, especially during the hottest periods of the day. Outdoor workers are encouraged to take regular breaks in shaded areas.

Cooling the body regularly, through cool showers, baths or placing damp cloths on the neck or wrists, can also help regulate body temperature.

Residents are also urged to check on vulnerable neighbours, relatives and friends, and never leave children, elderly persons or pets inside parked vehicles or poorly ventilated spaces.

For individuals experiencing excessive sweating, particularly children, oral rehydration solutions may help restore lost electrolytes.

Warning Signs of Heat Illness

Medical experts warn that heat exhaustion can manifest through symptoms such as heavy sweating, pale or clammy skin, dizziness, nausea, weakness and a rapid pulse.

More severe cases may lead to heat stroke, a life-threatening condition marked by body temperatures above 40°C, confusion, hot and dry skin, breathing difficulties, seizures or loss of consciousness.

Seek immediate medical help should be sought if a person experiences fainting, confusion, seizures, persistent vomiting, chest pain, breathing difficulties or stops sweating despite feeling extremely hot.

For safety, stay hydrated!

Authorities emphasise that staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged sun exposure and seeking shade remain the most effective ways to stay safe as Nigeria continues to experience unusually high temperatures.
