Scientists Race to Decode Santorini’s Volcanic Threat After Recent Earthquakes

Santorini, the postcard-perfect Greek island carved by a massive ancient eruption, is once again drawing global attention, not for its sunsets or cliffside villas, but for the growing questions beneath its surface.

Just weeks ago, nearly half of the island’s 11,000 residents fled following a wave of earthquakes that forced a temporary shutdown.

Now, a team of scientists led by Prof. Isobel Yeo of Britain’s National Oceanography Centre is investigating the risk of a future volcanic eruption one that could rival the cataclysmic blast that shaped the island itself.

“Underneath the whitewashed houses and luxury AirBnBs lies a restless geological heart,” Yeo explained, as her team deployed a robot to explore the submerged volcano. She specializes in submarine volcanoes, which make up about two-thirds of the world’s volcanoes but remain vastly understudied.

“It’s a bit like ‘out of sight, out of mind,’” Yeo said. “We know far less about underwater volcanoes than famous ones like Vesuvius, yet they can be just as dangerous.”

This new mission is prepared to uncover what kind of seismic activity could serve as a warning sign of an impending eruption.

In 2012, scientists observed signs of magma inflow beneath Santorini and noted that the island had “swelled up.”

Though the last eruption was in 1950, the recent tremors are a stark reminder of how active and unpredictable the region remains.

With two tectonic plates grinding beneath its iconic caldera, Santorini may be due for another dramatic chapter in its volcanic history.
