School Abductions: From Playgrounds To Haunted Grounds

The haunting memory of the 2014 abduction of 276 schoolgirls in Chibok still lingers, casting a shadow on those directly affected and leaving an indelible mark on the nation.

Regrettably, this historic tragedy is not an isolated incident, as a series of similar events have unfolded over the past decade, underscoring the pervasive horrors of terrorism and entrenched criminality.

Why The Reoccurrence In School Abductions?

The many more abductions that have followed since exposes the nation’s vulnerability to extremist violence and the dire threats faced by students seeking education.

These plethora of shocking incidents, characterized by its brazenness and brutality, continue to send shockwaves across the country and drawn international attention to the plight of abducted schoolchildren.

From the attack on the Federal Government College in Buni Yadi to the mass abduction in Dapchi and subsequent incidents in Kankara, Kagara, Jangebe, and beyond, the country has witnessed a wave of violence against students and educators.

Each abduction has left scars on affected communities, fueling fear and uncertainty about the safety of educational institutions.

2. FGC Buni Yadi, Yobe abduction (Feb 25, 2014): 58 male students abducted from the Federal Government College, Buni Yadi in Yobe state by Boko Haram militants.

3. Dapchi, Yobe abduction (Feb 19, 2018): 111 students abducted from the Government Girls Secondary and Technical College in Dapchi, Yobe state by Boko Haram insurgents.

4. Kankara, Katsina abduction (December 11, 2020): Over 300 students abducted from Government Science Secondary School in Kankara, Katsina state.
