Canada, Georgia, Germany, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, South Africa, Thailand, and Uruguay, plus 24 states, 3 territories, and the District of Columbia in the United States and the Australian Capital Territory in Australia have legalised marijuana for recreational purposes.

At the stroke of midnight, as the law came into effect, a crowd of hundreds gathered near Berlin’s iconic Brandenburg Gate, erupting in cheers. Many among them celebrated by lighting up joints, with one jubilant participant, 25-year-old Niyazi, describing it as “a bit of extra freedom.”
As the next phase of the legal overhaul, starting from July 1, individuals will have the option to procure cannabis through “cannabis clubs” within the country. These regulated organizations will be permitted to enlist up to 500 members each and distribute a maximum of 50 grams of cannabis per person per month.
Until this transition, Georg Wurth, director of the German Cannabis Association, advises consumers not to disclose the source of their cannabis if stopped by the police during street checks.
What It Means
The new regulations permit adults to possess small quantities of cannabis for personal use, while maintaining the ban for individuals under 18 years old.
Germany legalization of recreational cannabis was proposed by the ruling coalition party. As of April 1, adults can cultivate up to three plants for personal consumption, possessing up to 50g at home and 25g in public.
Starting from July 1, cannabis will be accessible through licensed not-for-profit clubs with a maximum membership of 500 adults. Only club members will have the privilege to consume the cannabis produced by these clubs.
The German government however made it clear that cannabis would remain illegal for minors and subject to strict regulations for young adults. Consumption near schools and playgrounds will also be prohibited.
This move positions Germany as the third European country, following Malta and Luxembourg, to legalize recreational cannabis use, thereby removing it from the list of banned substances.
