The fifth edition of the Prof. Akin Oyebode Cup enters its semi-final stage on Wednesday, October 14, with matches scheduled at Oluyemi Kayode Stadium in Ado-Ekiti, as the women’s category also begins.
Organisers, Phoenix Athletics Sports Limited, said this year’s tournament has attracted strong football performances, support from stakeholders and growing interest from talent scouts.
Held under the theme, “Building to Last,” the competition provides a platform for young footballers across Ekiti State to display their abilities and pursue opportunities for further development.
The tournament moved to Oluyemi Kayode Stadium after the group-stage matches at Ikole Township Stadium, Ikole-Ekiti. The venue will host the semi-finals and grand finale.
According to the organisers, improved live-streaming has expanded the competition’s reach, enabling more viewers and scouts to follow the matches. Player profiling and a partnership with Afriskaut, an African football scouting and talent-identification platform, are also intended to connect outstanding players with clubs, academies and other development pathways.
The introduction of the women’s category is expected to provide young female footballers with an opportunity to compete and showcase their potential. Wednesday’s matches will determine the finalists in both the male and female categories.
Preparations for the final are also ongoing, with sportswear partner OWU Sportswear expected to provide a ceremonial kit for the occasion. The kit will be unveiled ahead of the grand finale.
The tournament’s final matches are scheduled for Tuesday, October 20, at Oluyemi Kayode Stadium. The date was chosen by the sponsor, Hon. Akintunde Oyebode.
Phoenix Athletics Sports Limited commended Oyebode and his family for their continued support for youth development through football. The organisers also recognised the contributions of participating teams, coaches, Local Football Councils, match officials, partners and supporters.
With the competition nearing its conclusion, football enthusiasts and stakeholders have been urged to attend the remaining matches and support young players competing for honours.
