Outgoing President of The United States, Joe Biden is set to award the United States’ highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, to 19 individuals. It is recognition of their extraordinary contributions to society and the world.
One of them is world renowned footballer – Lionel Messi.
Also among the honorees are cultural icons, politicians, and philanthropists who have shaped industries and inspired generations.
Vogue editor-in-chief Dame Anna Wintour, a fashion powerhouse since 1988, will be honored for her influence in the fashion industry and her philanthropic efforts, including raising over $20 million for AIDS research and supporting UK arts organizations.
Also in line is the U2 frontman – Bono. Born Paul David Hewson, Bono is recognized for his tireless campaigning against poverty and his work supporting HIV/AIDS initiatives. Already a recipient of France’s highest cultural honor and an honorary knighthood, this medal adds to his distinguished list of accolades.
Billionaire philanthropist George Soros, a major Democratic donor and advocate for progressive causes, is also among the honorees. Soros, a Hungarian-born financier, has faced significant political challenges but remains a key figure in global philanthropy.
Celebrating Entertainment and Sports Icons
Hollywood legends Denzel Washington and Michael J. Fox join the cohort, celebrated for their contributions to film and advocacy. Basketball icon Earvin “Magic” Johnson, known for his career with the Los Angeles Lakers and his work in HIV/AIDS awareness, and football superstar Lionel Messi, whose on-field brilliance has captivated millions, are among the athletes receiving the medal.
Fashion designer Ralph Lauren, a symbol of American style and entrepreneurship, and George Stevens Jr, founder of the American Film Institute, also feature on the list. Former Kennedy Center chair, David Rubinstein rounds out the honorees in the arts and cultural sphere.
Humanitarian chef José Andrés, founder of World Central Kitchen, is being honored for his efforts to provide meals in conflict zones and disaster-stricken areas. Renowned British conservationist Jane Goodall and science educator Bill Nye will also receive the prestigious award for their groundbreaking work in environmental and scientific education.
Several awards will be presented posthumously, including to civil rights leader Fannie Lou Hamer, former US Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, former Defense Secretary Ash Carter, and former Michigan Governor George W. Romney.
This year’s honorees join a distinguished group that includes the likes of gymnast Simone Biles, actress Michelle Yeoh, and Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, reflecting the enduring significance of this accolade in honoring excellence, service, and impact across diverse fields.
