Ponzi Schemes: Desperation and Weak Regulations is Fuelling a Billion-Naira Scam Culture

In a nation where economic survival often feels like a daily gamble, the promise of high returns can be dangerously irresistible.

This is the reality for millions of Nigerians who have, time and again, fallen prey to Ponzi schemes — fraudulent investment platforms that promise wealth but deliver ruin.

The latest in a string of financial heartbreaks is CBex, a digital scheme that wiped out over N1.3 trillion from unsuspecting investors. Dressed up as a legitimate trading platform, CBex seduced users with the fantasy of fast profit, only to vanish into the ether like countless others before it.

But this isn’t a new story.

In 2016, MMM Nigeria, the Russian-born behemoth, promised a 30 percent monthly return. More than three million Nigerians poured in funds under the illusion of mutual financial aid. When it crumbled, it dragged down livelihoods and dreams with it. In its wake came Ultimate Cycler, Twinkas, and D9 Club, each offering even more outrageous returns and each collapsing under its own fraudulent weight.

And the wave didn’t stop.

MBA Forex, Chinmark, and Brisk Capital followed the same pattern — glitzy digital facades, massive influencer-backed marketing, empty promises, and devastating losses. From N171 billion lost to MBA Forex to N40 billion gone with Chinmark, and over N2 billion swept away by Brisk Capital, the numbers keep rising, as do the victims.

But why do these scams continue to thrive?

Nigeria’s unregulated and poorly policed business space offers fertile ground. In the absence of tight financial oversight, fraudsters operate freely, disguising themselves with sleek websites, manipulated testimonials, and tech jargon. Desperation, fuelled by unemployment and economic uncertainty, leaves the average Nigerian more susceptible.

Do we ever learn?

From agriculture-based investments to sports betting clones, the schemes change names and narratives, but their core tactic remains the same: offer extraordinary returns with minimal effort or risk. And people, struggling to escape poverty, take the bait.

Yet the warning signs are always there. Promises of high returns with little or no risk. Unsolicited phone calls and social media ads. Vague or overly complex explanations of how the money is invested. Pressure to recruit others for even greater rewards.

Despite these red flags, enforcement has been lax. But that may soon change.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has announced a renewed push to clamp down on Ponzi operators. According to Director-General Emomotimi Agama, the commission will prioritise investment fraud prevention in 2025. Under the newly passed Investments and Securities Bill (ISB) 2024, Ponzi scheme operators could face fines of N20 million and potential jail time.

More importantly, the bill proposes an outright ban on pyramid schemes and unlicensed investment models, signalling a strong stance against financial fraud.

But regulation alone won’t be enough.

Until Nigerians are armed with not just financial knowledge but institutional protection, Ponzi schemes will continue to reinvent themselves, exploiting economic vulnerability, weak law enforcement, and a never-ending hunger for a better life.
