Oyo Govt Partners Cyclist Aiming for Guinness Record to Empower 18 Orphaned Girls

The Oyo State Government has thrown its weight behind an ambitious Guinness World Record attempt by Ibadan-based female motorcyclist, Ebaide Joy, who is set to embark on a solo ride across 12 African countries in July 2025.

The historic journey will not only aim to break the current record for the longest solo ride by a female biker set at 30,000 kilometers, but also empower 18 orphaned girls through life-changing vocational training.

Announcing the initiative on Monday in Ibadan, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, Hon. Toyin Balogun, said the feat has received official approval from the Guinness World Records and is fully supported by the ministry under the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde.

Balogun praised Ebaide as a courageous motorcyclist and philanthropist whose journey reflects the resilience and spirit of African women. She described the initiative as a timely intervention that aligns with the ministry’s core mandate to empower vulnerable populations and reduce poverty.

“This is more than just a record-breaking adventure or an adrenaline-chasing venture. It’s a symbol of the resilience, courage, and commitment of the female demographic to break glass ceilings,” Balogun said.

She added that the state government is committed to supporting not only the training but also the post-graduation empowerment of the selected beneficiaries.

“Once these girls complete their training, the ministry will collaborate with Ebaide’s team to provide startup grants and equipment, ensuring they can pursue sustainable livelihoods,” she said.

The programme will offer three months of intensive training in tailoring, hairdressing, and catering to the 18 girls, all of whom come from orphanage backgrounds similar to Ebaide’s. Upon graduation, each participant will receive capital to start her own business.

Balogun commended Ebaide for transforming personal challenges including her experience growing up as an orphan and recovering from a spinal cord injury into a platform for uplifting others.

“You’ve been able to rise above personal and physical challenges, and you’re now creating opportunities for other vulnerable girls to thrive.”

That is not only truly extraordinary, it’s remarkable and deserving of support,” she stated.

Ebaide Joy, whose journeys are documented via a camera mounted on her motorcycle, shared that her travels are driven by purpose and passion. She described her upcoming trip as the highlight of her life, with the physical toll balanced by the mission to inspire and create impact.

“My journey is not just about breaking a record; it’s about breaking cycles of poverty,” she said during her visit to the ministry. “I grew up an orphan, and I understand the struggles they face. This mission is deeply personal.”

Her journey is expected to span three months, after which a graduation ceremony will be held to mark the beginning of a new chapter for the empowered girls.
