A prominent philanthropist in Ekiti State, Opeyemi Falegan, has criticized Governor Biodun Oyebanji for prioritizing political patronage over delivering democratic dividends to the people.
Speaking on Adamimogo 105.1FM Ibadan current affairs program Inside Scoop on Monday, Falegan described the state’s condition as deplorable and accused the governor of being more focused on securing a second term than addressing pressing governance issues.
Falegan, who is the founder of the ODF Foundation, has been vocal about governance failures in the state, questioned why Oyebanji should even consider seeking re-election next year.
According to him, the governor has failed to meet the expectations of those who voted him into power, leaving the state in dire straits. He argued that the administration has done little to improve infrastructure, education, and social welfare.
Expressing deep concern over the state of affairs, Falegan stated that he would continue using his personal resources through his foundation to support those in need. He lamented that many Ekiti residents are suffering due to a lack of effective governance and pledged to fill the gap where the government has failed.
The philanthropist, who claims to be the most popular figure in Ekiti, reiterated that true leadership is about service, not just political ambition. He called on political leaders to prioritize the well-being of the people rather than engaging in self-serving pursuits.
Beyond Ekiti, Falegan extended his concerns to the national level, urging President Bola Tinubu to reassess his economic policies. He noted that many Nigerians are grappling with economic hardship and called on the federal government to take urgent steps to ease their burdens.
According to him, policy adjustments are necessary to restore hope and create a more favorable environment for ordinary citizens. He maintained that leadership should be about making life better for the people rather than imposing additional hardships.
Falegan’s remarks have sparked discussions among political analysts and residents, with many awaiting a response from the state government regarding his criticisms.
