However, the country is relying on the gunption of a private source to reinstate control – Waltersmith Petroman.
As the nation grapples with the urgency of resolving its energy challenges, the 5,000-barrel per stream day Waltersmith refinery emerges as a crucial player, poised to amplify the government’s efforts in this critical arena.
The Powerhouse
Commissioned in 2020, the Waltersmith refinery, operates in Imo State as a subsidiary born from the visionary loins of Nigeria-based Waltersmith Petromen Oil.
A strategic joint venture, the refinery’s ownership is shared between Waltersmith Petroman Oil (70%) and the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (30%).
The journey to this monumental endeavor commenced with the issuance of a license by Nigeria’s Department of Petroleum Resources in June 2015, gaining construction approval in March 2017.
The final investment decision (FID) was a resounding affirmation of progress, reached in September 2018.
The Refinery’s Impact
President and Group Chief Executive Officer of Waltersmith Petroman Oil Limited, Mr. Abdulrasaq Isa, envisions a bolder future for the refinery. Plans are underway to elevate the processing plant’s capacity from the current 5,000 to an impressive 40,000 barrels per stream day, poised to churn out a staggering two million tonnes of petroleum products annually.
Since its inauguration in 2020, the refinery has been a steadfast contributor to the domestic market, supplying a substantial 600 million liters of petroleum products.
This marks not just a milestone for Waltersmith but a testament to its pivotal role in Nigeria’s energy narrative.
Government Applauds
Government recognition underscores the refinery’s significance in the national agenda. Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, the Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil), applauds Waltersmith Group and the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board for aligning with the federal mission to bolster domestic refining capacity.
He emphasizes the urgency of modular refineries as a swift solution while awaiting comprehensive rehabilitation of larger refineries.
“The quickest way to fix our energy challenge in the country should be through modular refineries, while we await the total rehabilitation of the big refineries.”
Also, the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board echoes this sentiment, expressing intent to collaborate with Waltersmith.
