Climate Action Africa, a non-governmental organization (NGO), has launched a tree-planting campaign aimed at addressing environmental degradation across the continent.
The team lead for the group,Grace Oluchi Mbah announced the development at the Climate Action Africa Forum (CAAF24) held recently in Lagos.
Mbah unveiled the organization’s ‘Billion Trees for Africa’ project, which seeks to enhance the ecological and economic resilience of African communities.
She stressed that the initiative, part of the NGO’s green economy programs, will support 5,000 African innovators by 2035.
“The challenges are stark: Africa is warming nearly faster than any other region, with 130 million people at risk from rising sea levels,”
Climate change has a significant impact on smallholder farmers, who constitute 60% of Africa’s population and produce 90% of its food. “Their lives and livelihoods are on the frontlines of this existential threat,” she added.
Mbah expressed confidence in the power of collective action, stating, “We at Climate Action Africa live on the premise that a small group of thoughtful, committed individuals can change the world.
A future that is sustainable, green, prosperous and harmonious with nature — that is the story of Africa we choose to write.” She announced the launch of the Billion Trees for Africa Initiative as a testament to this commitment.
Making Commitments
Achieving this ambitious goal will require a multifaceted approach. Climate Action Africa plans to collaborate with local communities, governments, and international organizations to mobilize resources and expertise.
The initiative will include educational programs to raise awareness about the importance of reforestation and environmental conservation.
Additionally, the NGO will employ innovative technologies to monitor tree growth and health, ensuring the longevity and sustainability of the planted trees. Financial incentives and support for smallholder farmers to participate in reforestation efforts will also be key, along with creating green jobs that focus on nurturing and maintaining the new forests.
By integrating these strategies, Climate Action Africa aims to foster a widespread, grassroots movement that will drive significant environmental and economic benefits for the continent.

In addition to the tree-planting initiative, CAAF24 also saw the unveiling of the Pan-African Green Economy Programme.
This partnership with IDEA AFRICA and the Founder Institute aims to cultivate a new generation of 5,000 green innovators across Africa by 2035.
