The Revolutionary Shockwave Treatment
Scientists have discovered that gentle shockwaves could regenerate heart tissue in patients following bypass surgery.
A study conducted in Austria with 63 participants revealed that those who received this new treatment could walk further and their hearts could pump more blood.
According to Prof. Johannes Holfeld from Innsbruck Medical University, “For the first time, we are seeing the heart muscle regenerate in a clinical setting, which could help millions of people.”
The study was funded by Austrian government departments, the US National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, and a company associated with Innsbruck Medical University.
Promising Results and Future Trials
Dubbed the “space hairdryer” by researchers, this device is set for larger trials to validate its efficacy in a broader patient group. In the initial study, half of the bypass patients were treated with soundwaves under general anesthetic, while the other half underwent a sham procedure.
A year after surgery, the shockwave group showed an 11.3% increase in the amount of oxygenated blood pumped by the heart, compared to a 6.3% increase in the control group. Additionally, shockwave patients could walk further without resting and reported a higher quality of life.
Prof. Holfeld highlighted the impact of this improvement, noting that patients could resume daily activities like walking their dogs or grocery shopping.
How It Works
Researchers in Austria have been working on regenerating damaged heart tissue by applying mild soundwaves shortly after bypass surgery.
This 10-minute procedure stimulates the growth of new vessels around the area damaged or scarred by a heart attack. The shockwave technique is similar to treatments used for conditions like injured tendons, ligaments, and erectile dysfunction. Higher-strength waves or pulses are also utilized in lithotripsy, a common procedure for breaking up kidney stones.
