New Dawn or Short Truce? Landmark 40% Pay Deal Aims to End ASUU’s Decade of Strikes

Nigeria’s crisis-ridden university system has been given a breather. The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have signed a landmark agreement, featuring a 40% salary increase for academic staff, designed to end years of paralyzing strikes and campus closures.

The newly ratified deal concludes a tortuous renegotiation process that began in 2017 to review the outdated 2009 FG–ASUU pact. Previous negotiation rounds, chaired by Wale Babalakin, Munzali Jibril, and the late Prof. Nimi Briggs, ended in deadlock.

The breakthrough was finally achieved under the committee led by former Head of Service Yayale Ahmed, inaugurated by the Tinubu administration in October 2024.

Central to the agreement is a 40% upward review of academic salaries in federal universities, effective January 1, 2026. Under the new structure:

– Professors will earn N1.74 million annually.

– Readers (Associate Professors) will receive N840,000 per annum.

The pact also encompasses improved conditions of service, commitments to increased university funding, strengthened institutional autonomy, and systemic reforms aimed at reversing sectoral decay, curbing the “Japa” brain drain, and repositioning public universities for sustainable development.

Any Stability?

At the signing ceremony in Abuja, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, framed the agreement as a historic turning point. “This is more than a formal document, it is renewed trust, restored confidence, and a decisive moment in the history of Nigeria’s tertiary education,” he stated, reaffirming President Tinubu’s commitment to uninterrupted academic calendars and enhanced lecturer welfare.

While the agreement marks the most significant breakthrough in over a decade, stakeholders remain cautiously optimistic. Past deals have crumbled under poor implementation, delayed payments, and unmet promises, fueling the cycle of strikes that have defined the sector since 2009.

If faithfully executed, this pact could restore stability to Nigeria’s public universities, reattract academic talent, and allow students to pursue their education without perennial disruption.
