Net Worth: One Money Metric That Might Matter More Than Your Income

When most people talk about money, the conversation often circles around income, monthly expenses, or even credit scores. But there’s one powerful financial metric that’s often ignored ‘net worth’. And no, this isn’t just a question for billionaires or chief executives.

So, what’s your net worth? Is it in naira, dollars, pounds or somewhere between?

Net worth is simple: it’s the difference between what you own and what you owe. Subtract your liabilities (debts) from your assets (everything you own), and the figure you get is your net worth.

But while the math is easy, the meaning runs deep.

“Net worth is a reflection of the financial decisions that you have made. You can see if your assets are growing or if your net worth is declining because you’re spending too much,” says Alissa Todd, a personal CFO and wealth advisor at The Wealth Consulting Group.

Whether you’re a fresh graduate or nearing retirement, tracking your net worth gives you a snapshot of your financial health. It tells you where you’re doing well, where you’re slipping, and what needs to change if you’re serious about building wealth.

Think of it as your financial report card—a clear, uncensored look at your money habits, decisions, and trajectory. And unlike income, which can fluctuate, your net worth reflects the bigger picture: how wisely you’re using your resources.

Want to build wealth? Start by building your net worth.

It’s not just about how much you make. Relying on a single source of income can leave you vulnerable. The financially savvy diversify—tapping into rental properties, dividends, side businesses, or digital gigs.

Those who reach millionaire status by 40 often share common habits: they invest smart, save systematically, and avoid wasting time (and money) chasing hot stock tips. They’re not just lucky—they’re intentional.

They also understand this golden rule: pay yourself first. Instead of saving what’s left after spending, they save first—automatically. This forces discipline and ensures consistent growth over time.

And they don’t fear debt, they manage it. High-net-worth individuals don’t max out cards for impulse buys. If they borrow, it’s usually strategic; like for real estate, business capital, or other assets that can grow their net worth.

Education is another hidden ingredient.

Millionaires are constant learners. They see courses, books, and seminars as investments in themselves. Their hunger for knowledge helps them adapt, stay ahead, and seize new opportunities.

While motivation is great for getting started, discipline builds wealth. Behind every successful entrepreneur or investor is a string of small, consistent habits—investing weekly, budgeting monthly, waking up early, and sticking to the plan.

If you’ve never calculated your net worth, now’s the time. Understanding where your money is going, what you own, and what you owe sets the stage for meaningful change.

Once you’ve got the numbers, you can start defining your financial goals. Whether it’s buying property, building a stock portfolio, or simply saving for the future—knowing your net worth helps you decide where to go next.

So ask yourself: What’s your net worth really saying about you?
