He is 39-year-old and ready to roll in one of the demanding examination institutions in Nigeria – JAMB.
A new chapter is set to begin at the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board following the appointment of Professor Segun Aina as the agency’s new Registrar. He succeeds Ishaq Oloyede whose tenure expires on July 31, 2026.
The appointment by President Bola Tinubu laces an accomplished academic and technology expert at the helm of one of Nigeria’s most critical educational institutions.
Aina steps into the role after a decade that many observers describe as transformative under Oloyede’s leadership. Since assuming office in 2016, Oloyede introduced sweeping reforms that reshaped the examination body’s operational structure and finances.
Within a few years of his appointment, JAMB significantly increased its remittances to the Federal Government, moving from less than N50 million generated over several decades before his tenure to ₦7.8 billion in a single year.
Now attention is shifting to the man expected to inherit the task of consolidating and expanding those reforms.
Professor Aina is an academic from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University where he has built a career around computing technologies and engineering research.
His educational background is resounding of a strong foundation in technology and engineering. He earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Systems Engineering in 2008, followed by a Master’s degree in Internet Computing and Network Security in 2009. He later obtained a doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering with a specialization in Signal Processing in 2015.
He also became a registered engineer under the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria in 2017.
Beyond academic qualifications, Aina’s expertise spans emerging technology fields including artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, human-computer interaction, image processing and data science.
His research interests suggest a professional career closely linked with digital systems and technological innovation, areas increasingly becoming central to modern educational assessment and administration.
Within the university system, he has held numerous leadership and administrative responsibilities.
He served as Chairman of the COREN Accreditation Committee for the 2023/2024 session and currently coordinates academic activities at a TETFund Centre of Excellence focused on digital literacy and emerging technologies.
He has also worked on accreditation panels, postgraduate coordination, e-learning committees and conference planning teams, alongside mentoring students through advisory roles.
Professionally, he belongs to several engineering and technology organisations including the Nigerian Computer Society, Nigerian Society of Engineers, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and Institution of Engineering and Technology.
His appointment comes at a time when the examination body faces increasing pressure to strengthen technological systems, improve transparency and address recurring concerns around examination administration.
