In a bid to nurture critical thinking and leadership skills among young Nigerians, HACmedia, a Lagos-based media initiative, is set to host Dare2Debate, an inter-school debate competition bringing together six secondary schools for an intellectually charged exchange of ideas on December 13.
The convener of the event, Davies Ikpoyi, said school debates are more than just contests, they are platforms for shaping future leaders equipped to navigate an increasingly complex and competitive world.
“Debate plays a vital role in schools as it equips students with the skills necessary to succeed in an ever-changing world,” Ikpoyi explained.
“Through debate, students improve their critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication abilities, which are essential for success in every area of life.”
According to him, the Dare2Debate initiative will focus on thought-provoking topics that touch on leadership, social welfare, community development, and economic growth. Prizes will be presented to outstanding participants who demonstrate exceptional insight and eloquence.
Ikpoyi added that beyond competition, the event seeks to inspire students to become active citizens and change agents in their communities.
“At Dare2Debate, we believe that investing in the development of young people is an investment in a brighter future,” he said. “We will continue to support and empower students to become leaders of tomorrow, equipped with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to make a positive difference in the world.”
He further noted that preparing for debates encourages young people to research, analyse data, and engage in respectful dialogue, habits that improve academic performance while promoting tolerance and appreciation of diverse perspectives.
The Dare2Debate competition is expected to draw educators, parents, and youth advocates who share a common vision of building a new generation of articulate, thoughtful, and socially conscious Nigerian leaders.
