Kami Rita Sherpa has achieved a remarkable feat, setting a new record as the first person to summit the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest, 29 times.
Surpassing his own previous record, Kami Rita now holds the record for the most ascents of Everest in its 71-year climbing history.
Kami Rita, also known as the ‘Everest man,’ embarked on the Spring Season Everest expedition from Kathmandu, leading a team of approximately 28 climbers organized by Seven Summit Treks to conquer the formidable peak.
“One man’s job, another man/woman’s dream”, he wrote.
Who is Kami Rita?
Kami Rita, hailing from the Sherpa community at the foothills of Everest, started his journey as a porter before transitioning into a seasoned climbing guide.
He made his inaugural ascent of Everest in 1994 at the age of 24.
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Kami Rita has scaled Everest nearly every year since his maiden climb, now totaling an impressive 29 ascents.
Despite challenges such as the closure of the south side of Everest in Nepal due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Kami Rita persevered and achieved his 25th summit in May 2021.
In 2023, Kami Rita tied the record with fellow guide Pasang Dawa Sherpa by completing his 27th ascent of Everest. However, by May 2023, he surpassed this milestone with his 28th climb.
Mount Everest
Standing at a towering height of 8,848.86 meters above sea level, Everest, known as Sagarmatha in Nepal, holds the distinction of being Earth’s tallest mountain peak.
In 2020, a collaborative effort between Chinese and Nepalese land surveyors reported an increase in Everest’s height from the previously recorded 8,848 meters established by the Survey of India in 1954.
On May 29, 1953, New Zealand’s Edmund Hillary and Nepali Sherpa Tenzing Norgay achieved the historic feat of being the first to reach the summit of Everest.
