Last month marked the hottest June ever recorded globally.
This is according to the European Union’s climate monitor, the Copernicus Climate Change Service.
This milestone is said to cap off a half-year characterized by extreme and destructive weather events, ranging from floods to heatwaves.
The director of Copernicus, Carlo Buontempo said since June 2023, each month has surpassed its previous temperature record in an unprecedented 13-month streak of global heat.
Buontempo who added that the development is more than a statistical oddity and it highlights a large and continuing shift in the climate, warned that even if this streak ends, new records will inevitably be set as the climate continues to warm.
The Copernicus boss also emphasized that the continued rise in global temperatures is unavoidable as long as humanity continues to emit heat-trapping gases into the atmosphere.
Recall that the average global temperature for June broke the previous record set in 2023, underscoring the ongoing climate crisis at the halfway mark of a year already marked by climate extremes.
