It’s Sports Business Time: Come, Let’s Talk! – Bayo-lanlege Kehinde

For years, the Nigerian sports ecosystem has been a paradox of potential and frustration. A sector brimming with untapped talent and opportunities, yet plagued by bureaucratic missteps and misplaced priorities. But now, it seems the tide is finally turning. With the federal government’s recent appointments of Mallam Shehu Dikko as Chairman and Chief Bukola Olopade as Director-General of the National Sports Commission, there’s a palpable sense of optimism among sports enthusiasts and stakeholders.

For me, these appointments mark a watershed moment, not just for the administration of sports in Nigeria but for its business potential. Both Dikko and Olopade are seasoned professionals whose credentials speak volumes. They bring not just expertise but an unmatched passion for leveraging sports as a tool for national development.

A Game-Changing Team

Interestingly, Mallam Shehu Dikko is no stranger to the sports landscape. As a former head of Nigeria’s football premier league, he understands the nuances of sports marketing and the critical role private investments play in funding. For too long, sports administration in Nigeria has been treated as an afterthought, with appointments often handed to individuals with little understanding of the industry. Unlike the careful selection of financial experts for finance ministries or legal professionals for justice departments, sports positions have been handed out casually, often sidelining true experts.

But with Dikko at the helm, there’s a shift. His track record shows a deep understanding of sports as both a passion and a profession. He’s the rare blend of an accountant by training and a sports administrator by reputation—a man who has dedicated his life to elevating the sports industry.

On the other hand, Chief Bukola Olopade, former Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Ogun State and also a former Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria National League, brings a lot of marketing and grassroots-oriented approach. Known for his immense contributions to youth and sports development, Olopade has always believed in the transformative power of sports. From organizing marathons across the country through his marketing company, Nilayo Sports, to championing inclusivity as a former national president of Wheelchair Basketball Federation of Nigeria his résumé is nothing short of remarkable.

What makes this duo particularly exciting is their shared vision for sports as big business. With over 2 dozens of National Sports Federations affiliated to the Nigeria Olympic Committee, each offering multiple products, the opportunities are staggering. Take football, for instance—the Nigerian Football Federation oversees national teams across various levels: U-17, U-20, U-23, the Super Eagles, the Falcons and the Flamingos to name a few. Add to that the leagues: the Premiership, National League, and Nationwide League. Then consider basketball, athletics, and countless other sports, each brimming with potential products and markets.

In total, Nigeria’s sports ecosystem boasts of more than 300 sports-related products waiting to be invested in. The implications for corporate organizations and sports marketers are immense. Imagine the revenue streams from sponsorships, merchandising, broadcasting rights, and event hosting.

The appointments of Dikko and Olopade couldn’t have come at a better time. For years, stakeholders have clamored for leaders who understand that sports go beyond competition—it’s a multi-billion-dollar industry that can drive economic growth, create jobs, and enhance national pride. Now, with these two at the helm, the sports sector is poised for a transformation.

For businesses looking to ride the wave of sports’ popularity and connect with audiences, the message is clear: it’s time to talk business.
