The Yoruba Council Worldwide has called for the introduction of African religious studies in the Nigerian school curriculum.
The council’s president, Aare Oba Oladotun Hassan, made this appeal on the occasion of Isese Day, a day dedicated to celebrating the rich traditions and spirituality of the Yoruba people.
Hassan drummed up the importance of integrating African traditional religion and cultural studies into the educational system to ensure that future generations remain connected to their roots. He also argued that the current curriculum is overly focused on Western religions and ideologies, neglecting the rich spiritual and cultural practices indigenous to Africa.
“It’s high time our children learn about their own heritage, the traditions, and the spirituality that has been part of our identity for centuries,”
Hassan added: “By including African religious studies in the curriculum, we not only preserve our culture but also instill a sense of pride and identity in our youth.”
The council’s president also noted that the inclusion of African religious studies would foster tolerance and understanding among students of different backgrounds, helping to bridge the gap between various ethnic and religious groups in Nigeria.
Hassan’s call comes at a time when there is growing interest in preserving African cultures and traditions, particularly among younger generations.
The Yoruba Council’s advocacy for a revised curriculum reflects a broader movement towards reclaiming and celebrating Africa’s rich cultural legacy.
