Hypertension Can Threaten Children Too

High blood pressure (BP) is often seen as an adult concern, but it can begin in childhood and persist throughout life. Despite its long-term consequences, pediatric hypertension receives little attention.

This is where the Action Network for Blood Pressure Research in Children and Adolescents (HyperChildNET) steps in, creating Europe’s first comprehensive initiative to tackle high blood pressure in young people.

Their research brings to mind the importance of primordial prevention addressing risk factors before they develop—to ensure healthier adults and reduce healthcare costs.

Accurately measuring blood pressure in children requires specialized equipment and techniques. HyperChildNET has enhanced this process by validating child-specific blood pressure monitors, ensuring reliable measurements across various age groups. The initiative also built Europe’s largest pediatric hypertension database, collecting data from 39,000 children across eight countries to better understand blood pressure trends in younger populations.

Beyond research, HyperChildNET has revolutionized education on pediatric hypertension, making critical information accessible in multiple languages. Their joint statement with the European Academy of Paediatrics representing 67 pediatric societies—has become a global reference, with over 5,500 downloads from countries including the USA, China, and India.

Professor Empar Lurbe from the University of Valencia, who chairs HyperChildNET, reiterates the urgency of addressing childhood hypertension: “The need for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of high blood pressure in children and adolescents is absolute.”

Its absence weakens research consensus and hinders changes in clinical practice.

The importance of early blood pressure monitoring is echoed by Dr. Ahlia Sekkarie, an epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “Hypertension in childhood is a precursor to heart disease and stroke in adulthood. Monitoring and managing it early can significantly impact long-term cardiovascular health,” she says.

Hypertension in teenagers is diagnosed similarly to adults: a systolic reading of at least 130 mmHg or a diastolic reading of 80 mmHg or higher. Elevated blood pressure is defined as a systolic reading between 120-129 mmHg with a diastolic reading below 80 mmHg.

A study analyzing data from the 2017–2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey examined blood pressure and body mass index among 2,600 youth aged 8 to 19. Among them, 8.7% had elevated blood pressure, while 5.4% had hypertension. Boys exhibited higher readings than girls, and blood pressure increased with age. Severe obesity was the strongest predictor of hypertension, while Hispanic youth had the lowest prevalence of elevated blood pressure.

Early heart health awareness should begin even before birth, according to Dr. Amy Peterson, a pediatric cardiologist at the University of Wisconsin. “Maternal health during pregnancy plays a crucial role in a child’s cardiovascular future. Obesity, hypertension, and diabetes during pregnancy can increase a child’s risk of developing heart disease, stroke, and diabetes later in life,” she explains.

In Nigeria, the rising incidence of hypertension has become a serious public health concern. Lagos State Health Commissioner Akin Abayomi describes the situation as alarming, citing its impact on morbidity, mortality, and the economy.

Speaking sometimes ago at the 24th Scientific Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Nigeria Hypertension Society (NHS) in Lagos, Abayomi underscored the need for urgent intervention. The conference, themed “Management of Hypertension in a Depressed Economy,” also highlighted the growing prevalence of hypertension in children.

With mounting evidence linking childhood hypertension to lifelong cardiovascular risks, medical experts and policymakers worldwide are pushing for stronger preventive measures.
