How Martin Luther King Jr. Helped Pay for Julia Roberts’ Birth

Long before Julia Roberts became one of Hollywood’s most celebrated actresses, her life was connected to one of the most remarkable civil rights families in American history.

Roberts was born in 1967, at a time when her parents, Walter and Betty Lou Roberts, were struggling financially while running a small acting school in Atlanta. According to an account later shared by Julia Roberts, the family received unexpected help from civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. and his wife, Coretta Scott King.

The connection between the two families began through the Roberts’ Actors and Actresses Workshop, a drama school in Atlanta.

During the 1960s, racial segregation remained deeply entrenched across the American South, making it difficult for Black children to find spaces where they could participate freely in creative activities.

Coretta Scott King was reportedly searching for a place where her children: Yolanda, Martin Luther King III, Dexter and Bernice  could learn and participate in theatre without discrimination.

She approached the Roberts family, who welcomed the King children into their school.

The relationship soon grew beyond the classroom. The two families developed a friendship built around a shared belief in inclusion, dignity and the importance of giving children opportunities to express themselves.

Years later, when Betty Lou Roberts was expecting Julia, the family was experiencing serious financial difficulties.

According to Julia Roberts, the Kings learned of the situation and decided to help. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King reportedly paid the medical expenses associated with Julia’s birth.

The actress recounted the family connection during a conversation with journalist Gayle King, explaining that her parents had opened their school to the King children when other institutions were unwilling to accept them.

“My parents had a theater school in Atlanta called the Actors and Actresses Workshop,” Roberts said. “One day Coretta Scott King called my mother and asked if her kids could be part of the school, because they were having a hard time finding a place that would accept them. My mom said, ‘Sure, come on over.’”

She added that the families subsequently became friends and that the Kings helped her family when they were experiencing financial difficulties.

The story offers a striking example of how personal relationships can transcend racial and social divisions, particularly during one of the most turbulent periods of American history.

For the Roberts family, welcoming the King children into their theatre school was an act of openness at a time when segregation restricted opportunities for Black families across the South.

For the Kings, helping the Roberts family in their moment of need became a return of that kindness.

Julia Roberts would eventually grow into an internationally recognised actress, winning an Academy Award and becoming one of the most prominent figures in modern Hollywood.

But behind the fame is a lesser-known family story, one involving friendship, racial inclusion and an act of generosity that connected two families across generations.

Sometimes, the most enduring stories are not about celebrities at all. They are about ordinary acts of kindness that quietly shape extraordinary lives.
