Germany Backs Nigeria on Security, Urges Unity as Violence Displaces Thousands

Germany has reiterated its support for Nigeria in tackling insecurity and rebuilding fractured communities, as concerns deepen over rising violence and displacement across parts of the country.

Germany’s Federal Government Commissioner for Freedom of Religion or Belief, Thomas Rachel who has been deeply moved on his recent visit, made the commitment in Abuja on the heels of a fact-finding mission to affected areas, including internally displaced persons (IDP) camps.

Speaking after the visit, Rachel described the humanitarian situation as troubling, noting that insecurity continues to cut across religious lines, affecting both Christians and Muslims.

“You see that Christians and Muslims have a common enemy. These are the terrorists. So let me express my full solidarity with Nigeria,” he said.

The German official recounted his visit to Yelwata, where a June 2025 attack claimed the lives of more than 200 Christians, describing the experience as deeply emotional. According to him, survivors remain gripped by fear and uncertainty, with many unsure of their future.

He added that displaced persons repeatedly called for improved security, humanitarian support, and a pathway back to their ancestral homes.

During his engagements, Rachel said he interacted with a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including victims, religious leaders, government officials, and community representatives.

“I spoke with Muslim people, with Christians, with humanist representatives. I visited the IDP camp at the International Market in Makurdi. I spoke with victims, and you can feel that they are not sure if they have a perspective for their life, and this makes me sad,” he said.

Beyond the immediate security concerns, Rachel also raised alarm over reports of human rights violations linked to the enforcement of blasphemy laws in some northern states, calling for careful consideration of rights protections alongside efforts to maintain order.

Nigeria continues to grapple with complex security challenges, particularly in the Middle Belt, where recurring attacks and communal tensions have displaced thousands.
