Boxing icon George Foreman, famously known as “Big George,” has died at the age of 76.

The American powerhouse, who lost his first heavyweight title to Muhammad Ali in the legendary “Rumble in the Jungle” fight in 1974, leaves behind a remarkable legacy that transcends the ring.

Foreman’s career spanned decades and milestones. He first gained global attention by winning Olympic gold in 1968 before claiming the world heavyweight title twice, 21 years apart.

His second reign at the age of 45 made him the oldest heavyweight champion in boxing history, a record that still stands today.

Beyond his boxing exploits, Foreman became a household name with the George Foreman Grill, a business venture that reportedly earned him hundreds of millions, surpassing his boxing earnings when he fought in the ring.

A Legacy That Shaped Boxing History

Born on January 10, 1949, in Marshall, Texas, Foreman was raised in poverty alongside six siblings by a single mother in the racially segregated American South. Despite his humble beginnings, he rose to become one of the greatest heavyweights of all time, as recognized by The Ring magazine.

His 1974 bout against Muhammad Ali in Kinshasa, Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) remains one of the most iconic moments in sports history.

Ali’s tactical brilliance with his “rope-a-dope” strategy stunned Foreman, delivering him his first professional defeat and redefining the sport.

Following the news of his passing, tributes have flooded in from across the boxing world. Mike Tyson, former world heavyweight champion, praised Foreman’s legacy, stating his “contribution to boxing and beyond will never be forgotten.”

Foreman retired in 1997, ending a career that combined ferocity in the ring with a gentle and entrepreneurial spirit outside it. From the boxing hall of fame to millions of kitchens worldwide, George Foreman’s legacy is etched in history—both as a champion and as an icon who redefined what it means to win.

So long, pugilist!
