Fraudsters Are Evolving—Here’s How Nigeria Can Fight Back Using PCI DSS

Cyber fraud is evolving, with criminals devising new tactics to exploit unsuspecting online users. But Nigeria is pushing back.

The Managing Director of Galaxy Backbone (GBB), Prof. Ibrahim Adeyanju says the agency’s recent recertification on Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) will play a key role in protecting Nigeria’s digital space, particularly the financial sector.

In a statement released by GBB spokesperson, Chidi Okpala, Adeyanju noted that achieving PCI DSS recertification is a major step in safeguarding sensitive financial data and reducing cyber threats.

“As an organization at the forefront of digital transformation and secure connectivity, achieving PCI DSS recertification reflects our unwavering commitment to data security, compliance, and international best practices,” Adeyanju stated.

How Serious Is the Threat?

A November 2024 report by Check Point Software Technologies revealed that businesses in Nigeria face an average of 3,759 cyberattacks per week, highlighting the scale of the crisis. The financial sector remains the most vulnerable, as hackers increasingly target payment systems, online transactions, and banking platforms.

Recognizing this, GBB has pledged to continue providing digital security solutions for both government and corporate sectors.

As such, the PCI DSS certification is a global standard for securing payment transactions. It ensures that financial service providers and businesses handling sensitive card information meet strict security protocols to prevent data breaches and fraud.

With GBB’s renewed certification, Nigerian financial institutions and businesses can operate with enhanced security and customer confidence.

Adeyanju is certain about GBB’s commitment to securing Nigeria’s digital economy, stating:

“Our financial services partners and customers can continue to trust GBB to provide secure, resilient, and high-performance infrastructure that meets global regulatory requirements.”

With advanced security frameworks, stronger regulations, and increased public awareness, Nigeria can definitely create a safer digital environment for all.
