FG Moves to Turn Research into Wealth as Minister Warns of ‘Shelf-Bound’ Innovations

Research oils the wheel of education.

Unfortunately, Nigeria’s vast pool of academic research is failing to translate into real economic value, the Federal Government has said, warning that many groundbreaking discoveries remain trapped in laboratories and academic journals instead of becoming products, services, or businesses capable of transforming lives.

The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Kingsley Udeh, raised the concern on Thursday, noting that despite substantial investments in research and development across universities, polytechnics and government institutes, the country has yet to reap the expected economic benefits.

According to the minister, Nigeria has made considerable progress in funding research across its academic institutions, but the outcomes have largely failed to translate into industrial growth, job creation, and broader economic development.

Udeh explained that in today’s global economy, countries that dominate technologically are not necessarily those with the most natural resources, but those capable of converting knowledge and research into practical value.

“Across the world, economic strength is increasingly determined by the ability to transform knowledge into value,” he said, noting that nations that have mastered research commercialisation have built strong industries, competitive technology sectors and resilient economies.

He added that Nigeria’s failure to convert research outputs into marketable products continues to contribute to persistent unemployment, weak industrialisation and the limited contribution of innovation to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Philip Ebiogeh, said the country must end the long-standing culture of allowing valuable research findings to “gather dust on shelves.”

Ebiogeh stressed that Nigeria must intentionally build systems that support patenting, prototyping, incubation, venture financing, regulatory support and market access to ensure that research breakthroughs move from academic papers to viable commercial ventures.

He further called for stronger collaboration among federal and state governments, research institutions and the private sector, urging stakeholders to establish innovation clusters, strengthen technology incubation centres and encourage private investment in research-driven enterprises.

“We must move beyond identifying problems and focus on practical solutions with measurable outcomes,” he said, assuring stakeholders that the ministry was committed to driving reforms that would unlock the commercial potential of Nigerian research.

The push for reform echoes earlier warnings by Kayode Adebowale, Chancellor of University of Ibadan, who cautioned that Nigeria’s quest for sustainable economic growth may remain out of reach if universities fail to convert research findings into commercially viable innovations.

Adebowale argued that research confined to academic departments cannot catalyse national development, stressing that universities must focus on creating products and technologies that industries can adopt.

In a bid to close the gap between knowledge creation and economic value, the Federal Government recently launched the National Research to Commercialisation Policy.

Under the initiative, the government has allocated N2 billion (about $1.41 million) to the Research, Innovation and Commercialisation Committee and earmarked N3 billion for programme operations in 2026.

Officials say the policy aims to strengthen the link between universities, research institutes and industry while supporting micro, small and medium enterprises as well as technology startups capable of transforming research outputs into market-ready innovations.

With the new push, authorities hope that Nigeria’s growing body of scientific research will move beyond academic archives to power industries, create jobs and drive long-term economic growth.
